Squad Taking Shape

According to Nixon (i know, i know) we are after a young CB who would command a fee, as usual hes as cryptic as ever and not giving much away other than that. Carlos Sanchez is to fly in for talks in the next couple o weeks, so him and Andrews shoyld sort out the CM issue. We are fine for wingers with LCY, Eagles, Petrov and Wylde with possibly Blakeman getting a chance at some point. I still think we need another striker. We only have Sordell who has done it at this level and hes still an unknown quantity to us. I think Ngog will find his shooting boots and SKD could hit double figures. With Coyle enquiring about Ryo again, it leads me to think he is considering Eagles in a more central attacking role like he did at Burnley and was successful there for them. So with all that in mind i am getting very excited and just want it to start now!

If you add Sordell, Wylde and the Chelsea loan promised as part of the Cahill deal and we will have strengthened in all areas

Getting Ryo back would just put a nice thick layer of iceing on the proverbial cake !!

It seems that we are getting our first choice targets too, which is a nice change. It's important that this squad can also cut it in the premiership, that's why I also think we need another striker.

Regarding Ryo, I am pretty sure the Coyle hasn't enquired, I think it's more like Arsenal have offered him to us. Personally, I don't rate him as highly as others do, yes h has potential, but for a loan that means pretty much nothing to us.

TRR, like i say if OC is going to use Eagles more as a central attacking midfielder then we would need cover for Chungy and Ryo would be a decent option there.

Regarding the striker situation we need someone who has done it at this level but is probably ready for the step up ready for if we get promoted. Its hard to think of many who fit this criteria. They also need to be affordable. Its a very narrow market but one i think we need to delve into.

We've got a striker who's done it at this level.
And he was in a bad team.

Sordell.

I agree squa starting to take shape, and no-ones really shown an interest in any of our players yet, we keep them, aswell as add Andrews, Mills and hopefully Sanchez and the young cb we after, suddenly we look fairly strong.

Will our team on opening day of the season be stronger than the team that faced Stoke on the final day?

I think Sordell will be a cracking player for us, i just worry that if he gets injured or suspended we are only left with SKD and Ngog with only youngsters to support them. We may have to go abroad for someone who fits what we need. A dip in the US market might be our best bet, theres some good up coming players there who would be decent cheap options. Theres also the situation at Rangers to be taken advantage of, Lafferty gets alot of stick but hes seemed to find his own in the past 2 seasons and could be a cheap option, but only if there was nobody else.

I think we'd be foolish not to sign a striker. I know Eagles is decent playing off the front man and I expect OC to use him there a lot more this season but as we've said theres only Sordell who has done it at this level and he's never scored more than 15. We need a 20+ a season man or another 15+ man and hope Ngog and SKD can each hit double figures.

Really worried fans expectations again, comments such as, we should be able to come straight back up etc.....i think we are being naive!

Naive would be thinking we can do it with what we have got. Most fans are aware that we need to strengthen in all areas. But theres also no reason why we shouldnt be confident. We've got a manager and players who have got out of this division. We have, on paper one of the strongest first XI in the league player for player and a squad that has been together for a good couple of seasons. Our core is more or less in tact, we have a very good young keeper who is constantly improving, we have our best 2 players coming back in LCY and Holden and we still have our leader and calming influence in SKD. The only area I worried about was the defense with us losing Cahill in Jan then Wheater getting injured, but the signing of Mills, the retention of Knight and the progression of Ream gives me hope. We got rid of the unsettling influences in Klasnic and Reo Coker and altogether we look like a settled squad that is ready for the push.

On paper we should be stronger than most others in the division. History shows it's harder than it looks to bounce back.
On the bright side I don't have to have my annual argument with the daft about us making a push for Europe. So that's one positive in all this

Sordell has only played 1 1/2 seasons of full football...scoring 25 in 75 games, so 1 in 3 as a 19-20 year old is pretty darn good. i would expect him to keep that record going at the very least, especially with having Ngog, Lee, Petrov and Holden creating chances, rather than the likes of John Eustace.

Coyle has to be bold and pair Ngog and Sord together, ive gone in depth on why i think it would work, but simple reason, both quick and both would compliment one another.

Sean Murray at Watford could be one of best performers this season though, 7 goals in 17 games from midfield in second half of the season. One to look out for.

I agree we could do with back-up, but realistically, who is going to come in as back-up for one season in the championship, that player wont be good enough for the PL if we get promoted straight away.

I know what you are saying HH, anyone coming in would have to settle for being backup, its difficult, i suppose we just have to hope O'Halloran and/or Eaves are ready to step up should they be needed and as i've said before I expect Eagles to be deployed more centrally after his 15 goals for Burnley in that position.

I really think Ngog and Sordell could be deadly. Both have pace and natural ability on the ball. Ngog has shown he is more than capable of holding the ball up and bringing others in to play. With Holden and potentially Andrews/Sanchez/Pratley/Mavies behind them they should get more chances against lesser opposition. SKD will still have a massive influence from the start and off the bench and hopefully he can be his usual brutish self against defenders who wont be quite used to it!

GG, I looked at this post earlier today and was going to say that a look over the pond might be a good shout. My Mrs, wanted me to take her to have her nails done and her legs waxed, so the more important issue took presidence. I love her soft silky legs.

Damn good job she doesn't read these posts.

To be serious, I do think there will be some players in the states that could fit the bill at a reasonable fee. We do have contacts over there who should be able to help.

I do keep an eye on the MLS and the league itself has progressed a hell of a lot over the past 5 or so years. It used to get a pretty bad rep but the standard of football and callibre of players going over there and being produced from within has rapidly improved. Its a market we have started to tap in to with Holden and Ream and there are some bargains to be had.

Young Juan Agudelo at NY Red Bulls is a promising prospect and highly rated over there and Omar Salgado at Vancouver broke into the first team at just 17 last year. Fredy Montero at Seattle, at 24 is more experienced and would also do a job in the Champ, he was linked with Fulham last year and is Seattles highest paid player.

Like I say theres been a lot of snobbery towards the MLS but they are really starting to produce some good players which is highlighted by the rise of the US national team.

Let' hope our contacts will recommend some decent forwards. As has been stated we could do with a decent striker.

I agree about a striker what about kevin Phillips as cover

My scooby senses say there'll be a big name exit yet... The one to balance the books with summer spending...

Something like CYL or Holden in early September... Takes the steam out of our sails...

Hopefully a 5-0 win over his former club will be the goodbye present...

Steam out of our sails...

Did I just make that up!!!

People forget on the striker front that we have 6 loan slots to fill. Pointless bringing in some striker to be 4th choice on a permanent deal when the aim is to go straight back up. Maybe look to get an experienced player in this league like DJ Campbell or Bothroyd on loan from QPR given they're now 5/6th choice.

posted on 21/6/12

How are you MT hope all is well? I do still fancy CYL to go as he is too good for the championship and there is interest from bigger clubs so who knows. With super 'in the championship' eagles on board we may have to let him go.

posted on 22/6/12

Well I hope that you are both wrong as it would be a mistake in my opinion. Having said that I don't expect any one else to leave the club. We have released enough players and Eddie has stated he will continue to bank roll the club.

We are told by Gartside that Owen Coyle does not need to sell anybody, so why would he want to get rid of our best players. It doesn't make any sense to me.

If, and I can't see this happening, we are so far adrift at Christmas that it's unconceivable that we can't get promoted, I could then see some of our better players wanting away. I can't even contemplate that happening, I don't believe it will.

posted on 22/6/12

Sadly we are not city so can't ride it out if CYL says he wants to go. It is in his hands regardless of what Gartside or coyle say

"How are you MT hope all is well?"

Evening pal, I'm very well thank you.. Hope all good your end...?!

Slight dip on here at the moment, but it will pick up towards the start of the season.. Can't wait for a trip to Burnley..

That last sentence was only the 4th time it's been said in history. And the first not on Jeremy Kyle...
