Some touchy, touchy people on this thread.

Makar, you're just getting wound up. Other people are producing legitimate points.

TOOR why did you write an article about this if you thought that it was done in all innocence?

You by posting this article must have have thought it was in someway racist, hence you must be a racist yourself. That's only my opinion though

Balotelli is apparently very upset about this, is he racist?

This is the last I will say on the matter as its clearly a difference of opinions.

But the film was made in 1933 and lots of films is this age had racist themes due to the times.

Anyone over 30 that has seen KK and didn't know of a link to racism/slavery is just clueless or blinkerd, which is worse.

TOOR, I understand what you're trying to say, in that, there are people who see, or think they can see, the racial connotations in something which is not inherently racist. For example a school changing the words of baa baa black sheep to baa baa rainbow sheep so that black kids aren't offended. That is ridiculous. Same with the words blackmarket and black magic etc.

But with this cartoon, there are definite racial connotations, and I don't think that argument that people are seeing it as racist which makes them racist can be used here

What in the world are you banging on about now? I have clearly shown that I don't consider it racist, throughout this article. Can't you read? Don't answer that.

I posted the article as I read a BBC article claiming that the cartoon was racist, which I disagreed with and was seeking not only the opinion of others but I wanted to know why anybody thought it was racist, as I couldn't work it out. I have an answer to that question but it's still not what was intended in the cartoon, in my opinion.

Balotelli was upset with the picture? He must be a racist then for making the link between himself and the fact that people like to use the racial stereotypes of black people being like Monkeys then.

I think by bringing colour into something, which has nothing to do with colour, can be seen as racist, by some.

To believe that the cartoonist wasn't aware of the potentially controversial aspect of this cartoon is naive, but there are various ways in which it can be interpreted, as with all cartoons/artwork etc.

Would you be upset if you read an article which says that a cartoon is made about you and is racist? I would. However if this hadn't been the case and people had seen it for what it was, then he might not have been upset.

Apparently not. Apparently anyone that makes this link is a racist themselves.

I don't understand why people are fearing the truth here. It is this sort of delusion that caused such friction for Liverpool fans after the Suarez incident.

What I am saying is, perhaps the illustration isn't racist, but let's not pretend that the illustrator never considered this. I don't think the illustration is racist, however I think he purposefully knew what he was doing and was hiding behind the 'it's you that is racist not me' card. The same as when anyone that thought that perhaps Suarez was foolish to say what he did was then called racist at the time.

This may be true but I don't believe so. What he depicted in the cartoon is obvious, whether he thought he would stir it up, knowing full well some might make a link to racism, is not.

You don't think, for a minute, that perhaps had Balotelli seen that picture standalone, without the article or anything, he wouldn't have been offended about being pictured as a monkey so soon after having bananas thrown at him?. Really?

I'm sorry, does it sound ridiculous to you when somebody suggest that because something isn't real, it makes it any less relevant to what the cartoonist was depicting?

Well then, let's say we agree.

Racial incidents have nothing to do with the cartoon as race is not depicted in the cartoon. So why the link? Would Mario be offended by being depicted as King Kong? That would depend on whether he believes the cartoonist was being racist or simply depicting him as King Kong, who was misunderstood.

Isn't the cartoonist Italian? Why would he want to depict a fellow national in a bad light?

I see it as the all conquering Italian in the national colour track suit, placed on the epitome of all English buildings - more as a dig at the two nations than any other connotations that could be placed on it. However if Balotelli is offended by it then he has that right as it is him being depicted.
