Nigel has lived and breathed football all his life. He lived with the greatest manager ever, he sat on the bench at Derby as a boy. He played for England.

Coaching qualifications are not designed for people like Nigel.

Jack Nicklaus sons were shiite at golf, the best they could do was carry his bag, please don't compare nigel and his dad for those reasons Iwas, you could pick holes all day in that arguement.

Agreed Igor but didn't one of his sons play on the US PGA tour for a while? Couldn't of been that shiite...

And lets not forget, Simon Clough is a newsagent. He also sat on the bench with his Dad when he was a boy.

Baz, he probably got the card because of his dads name.

And baz, my home course gonna be on SKY in a few weeks, the Euro-Pro tour is coming to town, ill let ya know what night

Is that home course Morley Hayes Igor?

No, Concra Wood, pro-am today.

Apologies to go off topic, but Gary Nicklaus: 1 second place and 5 top 25 finishes on the US PGA tour.

A shadow of his father's achievements but, nevertheless, an accomplished golfer in his own right.

More non league than premier league then, no comparisions there then

How do coaching badges work? Easy, you sew them on to shirt and they stay there.

I used to be a AAA coach and all it requires is to attend some courses and be observed in a coaching role. It says that you have reached certain competences as defined by the awarding body. Whether those competences are necessary in order to be a good coach is another story. How many coaching badges did Clough senior, Revie, Shankly etc have?

Wasn't mandatory back then to have them.

Like passing your driving test yesterday , you are no better at driving than before your test , but you can now drive on your own.
NC states that time with the family will not allow at the moment , you cannot knock the lad for being a good Dad.
Problem is the job he is in is not a 9-5 and players need watching in Scotland , Wales and Europe, apart from the Belgium lad in his first year I cannot recall Nc signing or scouting too many.
I have contacts at EMA and they often see managers going off to see players , they never see NC. With our budget we should be looking at europe , in the past we have signed some decent players from over the water.
Sorry to say family life and football management is hard to balance , but the kids like the money along with the wives .
Sometimes you have to decide which one you want most.

So what IgOR, does that mean they were bad coaches because they didn't have them. Hoop jumping seems to be the 21st century obsession. You can't even get a job as the bloke who turns the road sign to stop and go nowadays without a certificate. Someone came along one day and said that coaching certificates were mandatory and that was it. I haven't seen any evidence that coaches are now better than they used to be. Football is a simple game, despite the gibberish that comes out of the mouths of pundits, it really isn't necessary to have certificates to coach it.

Spart, as a "badge holder" myself, I agree that having a badge does not mean you are a good coach any more than not having a badge means you are a bad coach.
All it means is that you've attended a few weeks of training courses, been watched running training sessions and that someone has signed you off.
I see coaches every week who do things totally against what they were "taught" of the FA courses and, if I'm honest, I'm sure I do many things wrong myself.

Robrea's analogy to a driving test is spot on.

I think Nigel is making a stubborn stance against the FA on this one and, while I applaud his work/life balance attitude, I cant believe he couldn't spend a little time over at Burton and get signed off.

Peeder,

Does the Badge holder have to complete the top badge away from his home FA? I'm sure I saw that some where, I could well be wrong though

Robrea, I think you need to have a listen to this interview from radio Derby yesterday on the iplayer, 2hrs 10 mins in. This lad is from Norway!

Would ANYONE waste their time getting badges they think are irrelevant, just to make yourself eligible for jobs that you'll never want - as you're already in the one job you truly want?

posted on 10/7/12

the higher end coaching badges incorporate things like fitness, diet, physiotherapy, media training, psychology and budget management.

Looking now, it's obvious Nigel hasnt got this qualification.

Bit of a conflict of interest though I would have thought...

If Nigel gets us promoted to the PL he loses his job 12 weeks into the season.

Not exactly going to motivate him to get us up is it?

posted on 10/7/12

I think he'd step down at that point Wideboy (IF we ever got there!) as he would have 'taken us as far as he can'.

So Mostyn, is Nigel incapable of reading a book, the things you mention aint rocket science. Any idiot can learn about them from a variety of sources. Also does it need everyone at the club to know these things. Surely you can delegate stuff like fitness and diet. This coaching badge is just a red herring used by the anti Clough brigade.

I don't think Nigel needs any training in budget management after over 3 years being employed by GSE. He could probably show the lecturers a few tricks.

Do you need media training to utter the platitudes that most coaches utter? Why should that be part of the job? Football is a simple game played by generally quite simple men.

I am certain Nigel is more than capable of jumping through the hoops to obtain his coaching certificates. However i would bet that he shares the same opinion of them as most people do in football.

I used to be college lecturer and had a PGCE, the college wanted me to do D32/33 to be an assessor. As I thought the qualification was a pile of poo I resisted. It wasn't that it was difficult, they had people who were close to special needs with them, it was just that I didn't see the point. I suspect Nigel may feel the same way about coaching badges.

posted on 10/7/12

I'm not sure that is correct wideboy given he's already in the job! I think the rule you refer to applies to NEW appointments, including 'caretaker' managers...

If Nigel announced he was taking the badges, the knockers would be saying he's trying to line up a job elsewhere!
