Joe Allen is an exciting player. If you compare him to all the young midfield players in England, I would say he is a very exciting player.
Thats the trouble.
You are comparing him to Javi Martinez and Ganso and any other fancy name that the papers come up with that Liverpool have no realistic chance of signing.
WAIT, we arent signing neymar!!!!!!!!!!!1
We should sign a good old fashioned English number 9.

You are deluded ttliv87.
There is no evidence that Ramirez would have signed by now if Comolli was still here, and him and Allen don't even play in the same position anyway so its no comparison at all.
All this talk about Ramirez has come from the media only, and the media proved what 'inside information' they have with the managerial appointment, when they didn't have a clue what was going on until literally the day before Rodgers was appointed.
Joe Allen would be a great signing imo, he's young, he plays Brendan's passing game and is better than a few of the midfielders currently at the club.
Joe Allen is my number one choice. There, I've said it. JimmyTheRed
Maybe I haven't looked closely enough but I wasn't aware of any fans moaning for we haven't signed the likes of Ozil or Iniesta. I think it's a natural reaction though, that due to FSG 'managing our expectations' we're now supposed to be exciting at the prospect of Borini and Dempsey. I'm not saying they aren't good players who'll do a good job but they're not of the calibre of what we, the fans, are used to being linked with, such as Suarez, Torres or Masch.
You're right though, it us all about wages. FSG (for perfectly valid reasons) are no longer prepared to offer the type of wage that could entice a top drawer player (even without Champs League). Unfortunately, this will probably result in much the same way it has at Arsenal: a struggle to break into the highest echelon of the league and the star players leaving in search of more money.
But Suarez, Torres and Masch are exceptions, not the rule.
If fans are stupid enough to think that every player we sign will of that global calibre, then that's their own fault for being stupid.
What no Messi? But he fits the FSG model young and can kick a ball a bit !!!
I think you will find that most of the moans are that we have not signed anyone and others have.
For me though a name is just that a name. As long as they play well for us that's all that matters. Not a price tag. Look at Ibrahimovic FFS his total sales value is about 180 million and he ain't that good . In fact even Messi is not that good
Players like Torres, Suarez, Masch, Alonso used to be the rule, not the exception.
I think it's perfectly understandable that there is now a sense of disappointment among some members of the fanbase that that is no longer the case.
Are we talking about The Masch ? The one who couldn't get in the West ham team?
Yeah. The same one who's a regular for Argentina and Barcelona.
The problem is the extortionate price-tags placed of young english 'talent'. The gulf in quality between english players and similarly priced foreign players is obvious. Therefore its only natural to want to get more for your money by buying foreign. Whether you can actually attract them while still complying with the home-grown quota is another matter but there's nothing wrong with wanting the best players in your team
You are talking rubbish Shorlight.
We bought Pennant, Benayoun and Babel in the same year we bought Torres.
Were they all part of this rule of only buying the best that you have dreamt up?
Short I am not disagreeing with you as such but the players you mention and others we have had we have turned them into expensive stars Torres 22is sold for 50 is a good example. What I am saying us that we don't need to buy Messi to be good (yes it would help !!) I am saying it is still possible to buy well but not at extortionate prices. Ibrahimovic is a good example
Righteous.
You're taking my comments out of context. I wasn't implying it was the rule that we ONLY signed top drawer players, but more that it was the exception to the rule when we didn't. Now, I would suggest, it's the other way around.
Its not the exception to the rule when we don't though.
I bet if you list all of Liverpool's signings in the last 20 years, less than double figures will be of 'the class of Masch, Torres, Suarez...'.
So if we are signing players of that class so infrequently, how the hell are all the other signings exceptions?
If you are saying we should be targeting players of that class, then maybe we should, but you also have to accept that right now, the VAST majority of players in the class have better options than Liverpool.
So are we supposed to sign nobody, because we can't attract the very best at the moment? Or, do we try to sign players who could be the best in a few years time? (Who had heard of Alonso when we signed him?, or Hyppia?)
Righteous.
I think we're basically in agreement. I'm not saying we should only target top drawer players, just that, at the moment at least, we can't attract them - unlike in recent years.
I don't think we are in agreement because you belittle potential signings like Borini and Dempsey, who I think would both be good players for us and I am excited at the thought of them joining.
A new signing doesn't have to be Fernando Torres to be exciting, though obviously if we suddenly signed Javi Martinez or Iker Muniain that would be more exciting.
if you read my comments again you'll see I didn't belittle anyone. I said both Borini and Dempsey are good players who'll do a good job. They aren't the sand calibre of the likes of Torres. That's all.
