it's not deliberate GGC, i just get drawn into these things. i honestly rarely debate for the sake of it, but because i have strong views about the point, and i think it's been unfairly represented. The modern view of the empire is one of the things that annoys me the most.

They had Puerto Rico which I'm sure isn't actually classified as a proper country.

anyone who did not watch the series.. Empire or Empire of the seas

watch them both on catch up

your have alot better knowledge of all the good and bad things that happened

One thing is for sure, if we had not done it by first defeating the French and Spanish then they would of done it and we all know how bad the Spanish used to be in other peoples countrys, just ask the South Americans

one important thing that they missed on was the defeat of the Spanish Armada which essentially guaranteed us the peace in order to build our Empire.

that jeremy paxman programme (Empire) was the most left wing jaundiced thing ive ever seen in my life. it made me sick.

you cant in any way thing you have had an education about the british empire though watching this claptrap.

for some more balanced criticisism of the british overseas, the recent documentary about singapore is a vastly better reference.

your about 200 years out there i think.

waterloo is a more appropriate reference for this.

I think it would only be fair to give an unbiased point of the empire, which is not black and white at all, the main issues for the empire were not people but trade routes, in order to ensure Britain got say spices for example you needed to ensure the route traversed wasn't riotous and so peacekeeping was more of a necessity than a genuine love of peace for the people. For example Britain sent Indian business owners toKenya to do their bidding and run shops and establish their similar class based structure into Kenya. It is factually accurate to say that when colonisation ended and Britain pulled out of various african colonies that africa began to crumple a bit and couldn't cope, but this is also true because in many respects pulling out leaves africa in debt to us and has served the western world at large very well with regard to UN veto and ensuring tht countries we have pilfered (not just Britain, US and France too ) and used their resources are then loaned a large amount of money which they cannot pay back the interest on let alone the loan; due to their inability to pay, we set up bases, get our own contractors to build this and that and use their resources all the while telling them to vote our way in UN votes.

I think our greatest asset in Britain is the defiance of all men and women and children of all races who have ever been here.

I would have liked to seen some health and safety type risk assesment representation in last nights show Great Britian is good at that
