as you probably know, Waterloo wasn't a British victory
JPB.. i know alot about it anyway but i think that program told a fantastic story, we were not perfect you know and its only many yrs later that a lot of the world can see benefits of a lot of what we achieved out there
BM - You have neglected to mention the vast infrstructure and other resources which the british took to these countries which britain had no compensation for when it left.
some countries and areas fell apart when the british left - east africa, also bengal. some went from strength to strength - australia, new zealand, south africa, canada.
"We trust that the present occasion
may tend to unite in bonds of close
affection ourselves and our subjects;
that from the highest to the humblest,
all may feel that under our rule the
great principles of liberty, equity,
and justice are secured to them; and
to promote their happiness, to add to
their prosperity, and advance their
welfare, are the ever present aims and
objects of our Empire."
Queen Victoria, India, 1877

Even the Aussies liked it
Out of the 4 main colonial powers (Britain, France, Spain and Portugal) we were probably the least brutal and left the most enduring legacy in democracy, legal systems, education and even the railways. The good definately outweighs the bad and the fact there is a Commonwealth shows we're not universaly detested by the nations we once ruled.
I hope the closing ceremony is as good
Binky
but apart from democracy, legal systems, education and even the railways, ... what have the British ever done for us?
Boris
well summed up
can we talk about the sport now
Robbie Renwick went to my school
Isn't it weird how the least exciting sports get most main coverage? I'm switching between two red button events - table tennis and handball - and loving both.

**************But that doesn't back up anything. That's just politicised talk. It's the same as George Bush and Blair bringing 'peace' to Iraq...Say one thing, do another. I know we did some good things, but we did and still do a lot and a lot of bad things globally
BIG
one other point on theose claiming waterloo wasnt a british victory :
"Wellington's army, positioned across the Brussels road on the Mont-Saint-Jean escarpment, withstood repeated attacks by the French, until, in the evening, the Prussians arrived in force and broke through Napoleon's right flank. At that moment, Wellington's Anglo-Allied army counter-attacked and drove the French army in disorder from the field. Pursuing coalition forces entered France and restored King Louis XVIII to the French throne. Napoleon abdicated, surrendered to the British"
