It's all about familiarity and context.
----------------------------------------
I have to take issue with that, as it's got little to do with familiarity & everything to do with intent.
A word is just a word, it's the intention of the person using it that can make it either extremely offensive or a term of endearment.
In the example you used the word in question could be used in a non offensive manner within that fraternity, but it could equally be used as a term of race hate, it would depend on the intention of the person using it & their intention would be obvious when taken in context.

TB, I think that is what he was trying to get at to be fair.
He should have said intent instead of familiarity, but I think his intent was as you've described.

I watched it with a friend who is a Utd fan and even he said that it was all blown ourt of proportion.
The amount of times Clark mentioned Liverpool fans being racist was incredible.
There are millions of Liverpool fans worldwide. Are we all racist?? No!! I was brought up in Nigeria and my family were the only white family in our region. All my friends were black. Half of my friends here in England are black. Am i still a racist?
I thought the programme was a complete joke. Clark Carlisle is the racist one in my eyes. He makes out the world is against anyone who is not white.
Liverpool FC and their fans need to accept blame once in a while and stop having this victim mentality.

Blame for what? That we're all racist?!
Apart from the Suarez case can you give me an example where we are portray ourselves as the victims?

It just seems that whenever an accusing finger is pointed at Liverpool and Scousers, they immediately go on the defensive and make out like they're the ones being wronged. Hillsborough, Heysel, Suarez, etc.
--------------------------------------
Can you explain in detail how Liverpool fans made out they were wrongly...ahem wronged, in each of the three incidents?

jesus christ... cant believe my eyes
There must be books somewhere on Liverpool and the chip on their shoulder. It's a perception - rightly or wrongly - which a lot of people have.

Dodging the question I see. You're a cowardly idiot that's why. Easy to whisper the accusations but you'll not lay them right there in the open because you're a coward.

I saw the documentary, I had an open mind about it, after all, this is the man that represents a lot of people, he's part of the kick it out campaign isn't he? He should know what he's talking about, right? Before he makes comments and starts casting dispersions about clubs, players, teams and the game?
It appears not, you'd have thought he would already have done his homework, as it's part of his job to represent people.
For someone who wants to help get rid of abuse in the game, for someone who wants to promote tolerance, he was quite judgemental and very ignorant, although he did learn some stuff by the end of the program.
I thought it was a poor documentary myself, over such a big issue they could've done much better with the airtime that it got.

There were 96 victims at Hillsborough you moron
Lads why bother trying to have a debate with this neanderthal. He should be a Utd fan.
Interestingly, the police have now been involved over rio ferdinands twitter comments.

There is also an interesting audio discussion in the side notes for that article, worth listening to.

Talking of Spurs, the documentary featured the word Y*D that is quite ofter heard at their games.
Should this world still be acceptable although it may be claimed that it is used in a non racial context and more a form of unification by Spurs fans
