Ashley Young will be hard to replace, but from a Chelsea fan (neutral) I still see Villa as a top 6 club
Mcleish will never get that money to spend .. Lerner is cutting back as most Villa fans probably know ... He might get 15 mill but its not enough !!
Unless you reinvest the money generated by selling your best players back into the team by buying good replacements then it seems you are in reverse. You paid money for a poor manager, yet the team is looking broken and without the class usually expected from a villa side.

There is a time when you have to sell a player. We were put in that position when Chelsea offered 50m for Torres. Every player has a price and with Villa not wanting to let Downing go 20m was the going rate.
Bottom line is like Torres your player wanted to leave and you got a good price. Good luck for the season ahead, I hope all that money is given back to McLeish. The Villa fans deserve that.

Downing going with not a single new signing on the table yet ought to get every Villa fan worried. It may come good in the end, but until we see what the end is we can't be happy.
In theory McLeish ought to have £36m, less his own £3m and GH's payoff, to spend; that's a tidy sum. One paper suggests that the Ash £17m will go to paying off the Bent fee, but the Milner cash ought to have done that.
I'm not happy about sticking with the existing defenders, but if Dunne can get back to what he was and Warnock does as well then it's manageable. It's the ability to score goals which is critical, and losing two class wingers is devastating. They need to be replaced; Albrighton is the only decent winger we've got and he can't do it all on his own. We also need somebody creative in the middle.
For out and out forwards we're OK I think. But, at the moment, not a happy time.
New manager, new team. Villa didn't exactly set the world on fire last year and to be fair, Downing and Young were quite average. So, only time will tell but I'm sure McLeish will give it a good go.
