A few years ago, i'd have wrote this off as bad, desperate writing and left it at that. But in light of their recent simmering improvements, i'm prepared to give them the benefit of my doubt and let them convince me i'm just 10 steps behind them on this one. As you said, it's not the heel turn itself that's suspect, Punk's an excellent heel, it's the timing.
I'm guessing the motivation will be The Rock getting the sort of favourism and attention he as the champion should be getting. If that's the sole rational WWE give him to work with, it's weak.
A Cena heelturn would've been more surprising tbh. The Rock taking out CM Punk, then Cena cashing in and winning then cheapshotting the Rock would've been nice.
Unless they turn him into basis heel cheat pinning and generally hiding behind people which would suck then it's not going to work
if he starts speaking his mind again - marks will cheer
if he faces cena - marks will cheer
there on an end to nowhere here tbh
Things are changing, being face or heel no longer seems to make as much difference to how well publicised a wrestler is. Probably because it is getting tougher and tougher for the WWE to get faces over.
Marks cheer most heels, jericho, bryan, miz, del rio all get cheered
Wrestling has evolved beyond the simplistic mentality that face = cheers, heel = boos. Face = correct agenda, heel = wrong agenda ...... Life isn't that simplistic, and wrestling would look outdated if it continued operating like that.
In this increasingly complicated world, good and bad just become matters of perception much of the time, and wrestling has taken that on board since the Hulkamania era. The most popular figures now are the anti-hero and the corrupted heel.
fyi, the corrupted heel is a largely untapped market in WWE. Those who played it aren't fondly remembered for it. It's just waiting for Cena to claim it as his own
With the obvious exception of Corporate Rock
Punk appeals to a much older audience so a heel turn won't affect his appeal.
In fact, given the modern admiration of heels, it could actually improve merchandise etc
