Calling All Science Buffs

The creationists try and subsume scientific words so that they sound more reasoned, it's an old tactic. What happens when time doesn't exist? Crazy physics. That's about it. The god squad cannot prove their god exists, the scientists cannot prove that 'god' doesn't exist, however, the scientists can prove physics and chemistry, there's a big difference there.

I am a firm non-believer, I refuse to believe in any god, christianity, judaism, islam, all spring from the same area, backgrounds (abraham) and they all contain a bunch of stories designed to manipulate how people think and behave, the devil didn't exist until some desperate cleric needed a balance against the glory of of his alleged god.

You don't need religion to teach you how to be good and do good things, just good people.

God is a myth.

Audio books

It's interesting that people use the "you can't possibly know that" article.

We don't know about the big bang, or about evolution but we have faith in those scientific theories (I do by the way).

It's the same as people having faith in religious beliefs.

It says in the Bible, Qu'ran, Torah etc about tolerance - wars are because of people not religion. People's misinterpretation of what is written down.

"You don't need religion to teach you how to be good and do good things, just good people."

Good in who's eyes? Your own. Osama Bin Laden thinks he's doing good by getting rid of infidels, doesn't mean he's right.

I didn't refer to anyone as a nutjob. I lived a number of years being open-minded, now I have made a choice, just as anyone who believes in religion does.

And of course there is the fact that these gods if they existed are pretty rubbish, what with all of the very bad stuff going on in the world, despite all of the faith put in them.

And using osama binladen fred, come on, dude, you could've easily used a catholic priest.

Is it not reasonable to suggest that many people who believe in religion are simply afraid to accept their own mortality?

E.g - your father dies, but now he is in a better place. Or simply 'somebody to talk to' in difficult times.

For me, it seems 'god' is nothing more than a route to a positive state of mind.

it's obvious what a known unknown is (eg i know i dont know if there's a god).

unknown unknown's are a bit more difficult.

it works better with risks. known risks and unknown risks. you dont know how any risks will turn out, but you are at least aware of some risks, whilst also being aware that there other (unknown - or unidentified) risks, will enivitably be encountered.

Can't argue with the first part

Second comment I've already answered.

"And using osama binladen fred, come on, dude, you could've easily used a catholic priest."

Did I say these catholic priests molesting children were any different, no?

People can be good in their own eyes very easily. But at the end of the day (according again to the scriptures, I don't necessarily believe it) being "good" in God's eye is what's important.

Well I think I can spare the €3.41 to find out! If not, I still have "The Universe in a nutshell" to get through. I found with "A brief history of time" that you need to be sober to read these books. I bought Universe about 6 years ago. Not sure what that says about my spare time.........

1manontherun, of course but you're talking about the pinnacle of our understanding of our world about us, what about all of the other things that we do actually know because of science.

The other thing is, scientists know there is far more to be learnt out there, you do know that there is a rover heading towards mars right now? It wasn't god that put it there, it was physics, mathematics and solid engineering.
