Very jealous if so!!

I was hoping Reading would loan him out to us (Forest) after signing McCleary.

Alvin's face =

Hope it's true, he was massive for us last season.

Yep he's at Hillsborough as well for the game today.

Really hope so, looking at our starting 11 we're looking fairly strong but a quick reliable (unlike JJ) winger would be the icing on the cake. A couple of more signings including a 20 goal striker would be the chocolate sprinkley bits on the cake.

Radio - fee agreed.. not yet signed..

..hope we sign Malek Jarolim he looks class

Not usually one to say so until the player is actually in the shirt but to all intents and purposes, it looks like he will be an Owl next week.

Just need a couple of stikers I think. We look a little short of firepower..but it starting to look quite good.

Certainly streets ahead of where we were ther last time we came up.

Fingers crossed we'll see summat on the OS soon. Perhaps Monday/Tuesday. Reading have been tricky.

Blimy, just when it seemed dead and buried, fanstatic news, just the t's to be crossed and the i's to be dotted and we'll have a hell of a player, great news

Now for that 20 goal striker then I think we are pretty much ready. Having said that the star are saying that we need to dip into the market for another CM as Lines is out for start of season but do we need to when we have signed Amado & McCabe for that position, also what with Jarolim on trial too I think we have enough cover, give the lads Amado and McCabe a chance I say.

Onto Harewood I very much doubt we'll offer him a contract as he has been here a month and no goals (though thats not his forte), COG keeps replacing him after an hour or so besides I doubt he's the type of Striker we need if we have COG already (if DJ still wants COG that is)

It's on BBC Sport, 4 year deal. Great news for the club, and a clear sign of ambition and moving forward.

I must admit that the bits I saw of him on TV he did look decent...but he was up against very, very poor defences...Do you think he'll be as effective in the Championship? Cos a four year deal is a wowser if it goes t1ts up...

You know what Sparty, you make a valid point there, there is the question that he may or may not find it tougher in this league than L1 as there are better quality defenders.

Personally theres no doubt in my mind that I think he'll be a like a duck to water at this level given how he performed last season at L1 level but on the other hand he will have to work even harder to maintain that level of performance in the Championship, which no doubt he will

A great signing by DJ and he'll give us some added spark, he & Pechnik on the other wing will be give defender something to think about as they are different types of wingers and can switch wings during games too

It'll be interesting to see what he does to "South Yorkshire's Top Team's" defence.

A four year deal for Antonio is hardly risky when you take into account that the Dingles have signed Mido.
A spherical whirlwind of dissent. A gluttonous hissy fit thrower. Have Pizza Hut buffet's made it to Barnsley yet?
This isn't Kanu, or Ben Haim, or even the aforementioned corpulent brutus mutai. This is an up and coming lad full of potential and on (you'd assume) middling money. Great to have him back, it's clear he's well up for it.
Very Happy!

Agreed, the difference between signing Mido (not sure what you think of this signing) & Antonio is that Mido is a player who got too big for his boots after a promising start to his career thus now only after a paycheck (plus no top flight club would touch him with a barge pole) which will be justly undeserved due to lack of effort due to the money and thinking that he is a big fish in a tiny pond. Although he has talent I suspect that Barnsley fans will see very little of this and will turn out to be a costly mistake in every sense.

Now what we have with Antonio is a player who is up and coming, loves the club and WILL put in the effort and WILL help make us successful and justify his price tag.

A 4 year deal is shrewd. We have leverage if we want to sell him on in a couple of years; he may step up a notch with a season in the Championship under his belt. I hate to say it but Sparty does have a point if it goes belly up. However, I doubt it will in this case. But, given the ambition we have and direction of travel that Mandaric sees us going in the contract with Antonio will be fairly insignificant in its third year.

Finally...

As for whether he will be good enough at this level, no qualms there. He has pace, can finish and has a decent footballing brain..he'll be fine at this level. Whether he would be good enough to play in the Prem, only time will tell but he is still young and if he keeps his head down and focusses, he will only get better.

Jones building an intersting squad ..more imaginative and with more potential than the one he had at Cardiff. I think he believes he can genuinly achieve something here and why shouldn't he? The structure, support etc is in place. This club has much more muscle and potential than he has been used to of late - Its just taken so damn long to get everyting sorted out here and all the dirt out of the engine.

A couple of stikers and a midfield would cap it off and put us in a good position for the season. Shame to see Lines go off - I think he could do well this term.

Cautiously optimistic ...

Mido was desperate to get his family out of Egypt and a looming civil war. He, like many in football, was impressed with the way Hill resurrected Vaz Te's career. He certainly isn't breaking the club's strict pay structure, he'll be on far less than Antonio's wage and it's a one year deal.

Time of course will tell if he can rediscover any of his former potential...but it certainly won't be a "costly mistake in every sense"...

As for four year deals...wasn't it those sort of contracts that almost sent you to the wall?

Franny Jeffers anyone....

posted on 7/8/12

I don't think "costly mistake" was limited to the financial sense. Just had a neb at his wiki. What a train wreck of a career. This potential you speak of (in a 29 yr old) has brought him one good season in the last nine years and numerous bust ups and hissy fits.
He did a great job for me on footy manager a while back, I think Hill must have the same version.

No transfer/signing on fees. No daft wage. No silly contract....No problem...
