So, yes a twenty goal a season man would be nice, but two or three fourteen or fifteen goal a season men could be even better.
-----------------------------------------
So your solution is to buy 2 or 3 new players that can give a huge contribution to goals as opposed to just one?
you got 15 out of Birtles!!
How?
You should sign Beano from Oxford
He's better than any striker you've ever had. No contest
You should enquire for Shane Long.
I agree with KingJacko. If (and it's a big if) we are set up to score from all over the park then what's the problem?
I think it is time to freshen up our strikers. McGoldrick has had his chance and for his sake really needs a new club to get his career going again, otherwise he is only going to drop down the pecking order at Forest. Tudgay can come on from the bench and get you a goal but he is never going to be consistent so I would give him one more season. Miller has not done it yet but I am hoping that this will be his season. I would also give Derbyshire another season as well. I expect most of our goals will come again from Dex and the midfield although I am hoping that Simon Cox will come in as well, hopefully to partner Dex up front. If we keep any of the Middle Eastern players maybe Al Mutawa will chip in with a few as well.
i totally agree with the sentiment of this article. We were one of the lowest scoring sides, particularly at home last season, and Mcleary topped the pile scoring 9 goals. We've lost Mcleary, but I think more crucial to our run in was the return of Dexter Blackstock, who managed 8 in the run despite just having recovered from a lengthy run in. We've made the permanent signings of Gillette and Guedioura, however, these guys aren't going to contribute significantly with the goals. The one midfielder we have that we've always known can score a few is Lewis, but for some reason or another, he's in and out of form too often. If we're too have a strong year I think his form will be vital. We also need to be quite ruthless and make some tough decisions regarding the current quota of front men, because we can't keep stock pilling them.
Ron, who said anything about buying three strikers, Dex had his best ever goals to games ratio last season (despite coming back from injury), if SO'D can get Miller playing at his best he could get double figures so that's potentially two we already have. If you can get five players into double fugures for the season (not impossible) that's at least fifty goals, add to that others weighing in you will have a very good return.
RedBlack, we got goals out of Birtles because back then we had a better team than Man U and a manager who gave him confidence instead of draining him of it. To be fair I know that the majority of United fans appreciated Birtles' efforts and really wanted him to succeed.

More to the point, how did Man U fail to get the best out of Birtles?
Possibly too many big time charlies were snobbish about a former non-league player sharing their dressing room and didn't bother to make him feel at home. Joe Jordan was probably too selfish to set up a couple of goals for his new strike partner to get him started.
It was United's loss, as he came back and scored freely again here.
Jacko, totally agree with you. People saying "we need a 20 goal a season man" winds me up. Firstly, who doesn't want that? Secondly, as you say, you don't need that and thirdly, there aren't that many around.
Lastly, getting a 20 a season striker doesn't guarentee success. In 2009/10 two blokes scored 20 and they played for Cardiff and Bristol C and neither went up. 2010/11's top scorer was Graham for Watford and in 2005/06 was King for Watford. 2006/07 was Cureton for Colchester!
