SUMMARY
* Hampshire on top
* Kent recovering from 93-5 thanks mainly to Geraint Jones 63no
* Glamorgan throw away an opening stand of 124
Come on Yorkshire. Knock over this last wicket and then get at them tonight. 124-0 and on the verge of bowling them out for less than 260.
On a personal note, I feel the contrivance at Scarborough last week went too far, calling into question the spirit of the game, so I hope that Yorkshire don't manage to get promotion off the back of that disgrace
A pity that the umpires couldn't take a leaf out of the Olympic Badminton officials book and disqualify them for not trying.
----
Very harsh. They were trying to make a game out of it, which has been difficult all season as we have sat and watched the crappy english weather destroy game after game. Yorkshire managed it too because the last day was a cracker. I applaud both sides, who both had chances to win the match in the end, no thanks to the weather.
Kent 261, Derbyshire 10/1, Khawaja out second ball for a duck
Khawaja has been very very disapointing compared to Guptil.
When you consider how many times the rain has done us over this season, we have been very unlucky.
I also don't understand why two captains making a result happen with the agreement if the umpires - Therefore within the rules of the game, upsets you.
It has happened many times before and for me is progressive, pro-active captaincy. A way to excite the paying public and stop yet another boring and frustrating rain draw.
How is Redfern doing of late? I felt he started the season very well.
Afraid I disagree Maksi. Everyone has to put up with the bad weather. Its not just Headingly that gets rained on you know!
However, not eveyone had an opposing captain willing to give a title contender a shot at full-points when the normal course of the match is a nailed-on draw. When the title might be decided on the generousity / stubborness of an opposing captain I think cricket is on a slippery slope.
Also, I am concerned that corruption driven by betting is both facilitated and disguised by these 'contrived' finishes.
I'm not saying there was anything dodgy in that way going on at Scarborough.
I am saying that the more these 'accommodations' become commonplace, the more potential there is for corruption to creep in. As a lover of the game I'd rather declarations were not allowed unless the team declaring was in the overwhelmingly dominant match position.
Wideboy, it wasn't so long ago this kind of contrived result, by others, sent us into the second division.
At what point last week Yorkshire were looking like they might be bowled out and losing the match. It was a dramatic game in the end? Thanks to the captains?
We have had plenty of bad luck this season, not least against Derbyshire recently
Wideboy, I agree with you in principle, but I can't blame Yorkshire or their oppo for that - it's been commonplace for years, unfortunately, and we wouldn't have complained if we had won in similair cicumstances.
As it is, it's in our own hands still, a win or 2 draws seals it (I think...)
Oh, as Khawaja has been very poor - if Guptill doesn't return, a quality opening bat is the #1 priority for next season, as Madsen can always drop down a place or 2 if we so choose.
* and (Khawaja) - not "as...".
hope we don't recall khawaja next season. he has been shocking whatever form of the game he is playing. shows just how weak Australia are right now if he is one of the men in contention to break into their test squad.
I don't much like ANY contrived result, not just the one at Scarborough last week, theough I do believe that was a particularly extreme example of contrivance.
On the entertainment point, we already have T20 and CB40 as formats were the rules have been changed to up the thrills and spills at the expense of the purity of the game.
The County Championship is meant to be FIRST CLASS CRICKET.
Day 2 Lunchtime Update
Essex 180 & 9/0 vs Hants 229
Hants have the edge, but not yet decisive. 20 wickets fallen in 4 sessions
Kent 261 vs Derbys 96/4
Kent have the edge, but not yet decisive.
Glam 272 vs Yorks 133/2
Still finely balanced.
Although it does not matter to the destination of the title, must mention the extraordinary match at Bristol.
Gloucs 220 & 48/2 vs Northants 100
22 wickets in 4 sessions
Yorkshires match not finely balanced now as we close in on their score at a rate of knots , with 4 wickets down.
The big end of season finish is happening for us
Stumps Day 2 Update
Essex 180 & 217/2 vs Hants 229
Essex wipe out Hants' 1st inning lead of 49 and then some. Unless Essex collapse badly tomorrow it's hard to see how Hants win from here. However, if Yorks do win their fixture - see below - a draw is unlikely to be enough for the south-coast team.
Kent 261 & 59/3 vs Derbys 200
Effectively 120/3, in a low scoring match 120 runs already on the board puts Kent in the stronger position, but it could still go either way. One wonders if Derbys will come to regret only earning one batting point from this match.
Glam 272 & 27/2 vs Yorks 344
Yorks still have a lead and only need 8 more wickets. Of the contenders they are in the best position to force a win and with a good forecast for the next 2 days will be confident of collecting 22 points.
Day 3 Lunchtime Update.
Essex are building a commanding lead over Hants. It will take an outstanding rearguard action from Hants on Day 4 to salvage a draw. Odds must be on an Essex victory at Southampton.
What Essex are doing to Hants at Southampton, Kent are doing to Derbyshire at Canterbury. Same comments apply.
Yorkshire are totally dominating at Headingley. I'd say a victory withing three days is on the cards here.
Very few positives for Derbys followers out of this round of matches. Two weeks ago we looked favourites for the title and certainties for promotion.
Now its down to a three-way bun-fight on the final round of matches, where Derbys have by far the toughest opposition.
Yorkshire are finally being allowed to play thanks to the weather and hey presto. See you in the top flight next season and to be honest, we have deserved that.
Well done Maksi, Yorks deserve to do it
403 for Derbys to win... what a way to get promoted this will be...
Woah, woah, woah - I've just seen Kent have bought James Tredwell back in for the final 2 days, how the hell does that work? They get to bring their #1 spinner in for the 4th innings...!!!
FARCICAL
Thanks Marco
Yorkshire need 11 and have 8 wickets to do it
You should be glad Tredwell is coming back
Looks like it will be;
1. Derbyshire
2. Yorkshire (-1)
3. Kent (-6)
...if my maths is correct. Hopefully Hampshire will lose to Essex and play their kids in our last game
Regarding Treadwell's inclusion.........it maybe looked upon by others as sour grapes, but lets be honest, what a joke?
Karl Krikken is rightly furious, see full story here:
http://www.espncricinfo.com/county-cricket-2012/content/story/581244.html
2 wickets lost in the morning session, 83-3 off 51 overs... remains evenly poised for an all-important win for Kent or, hopefully, a nigh on promotion-sealing draw for Derbyshire.
Borrington lasted 111 balls for 17
Khawaja is 41* off 148.
Come on Uzzy, earn your money son!!
We were doing okay at 103/3 then it became 103/5 in 9 balls.
For Whitely to be run-out is unforgivable at this stage!
Essex have beat Hampshire by 122 runs.
Can we hang-on until the close with three wickets remaining? Currently 155/7 with an hour and 40 minutes to stumps.
I can't see it somehow, but it would be a great result if we can pull it off!
