It all went wrong when Parry & Moores decided to sell to some muppets.
But which is more true out of the 2 statements above?
should never have even thought about selling Alonso. Whose idea was that in any case?
As soon as he won the Champions League with Houllier's team, he set about changing it - for the worse!
But even with selling Alonso he wanted to sign Gareth Barry who now playes for Manchester City who are the champions. But even still even if that goes down as a mistake its still only 1 mistake the man is human after all and can be allowed a mistake or 2 after everything he achieved. I mean Fergie signed Bebe??!!
But he changed Houlliers team for the better everybody can see that, he brought in players like Reina, Agger, Skrtel, Lucas, Shelvey, Sterling who are all still in the 1st team squad and lets not forget Mascherano, Alonso, Garcia, Torres etc.
No. 1 is true. With the right backing we would have soon been back in the top 4. Worst day for LFC when H&G sacked him. Absolute c u next tuesday s.

We reached the final with Rafa's team 2 years later
It all went wrong in his last season. He was battling the owners and it looked like he was trying to prove a point by playing average players.
And finished 2nd in the league, whats our odds on finishing 2nd in the league this year??
T Bone, do you think if our new owners came in in Rafas last season and decided to stick with him as manager things would be different to what they are now?
I also hate this "he won the champions league with Houlliers team"!!
How can people say that when that team included Luis Garcia and Xabi Alonso (signed by Rafa) and then Rafa got to the final of the champions league again 2 years later!!
It went wrong once his battle with the owners became more public. It was like his own personal war.
It became more about him and not the team
Thats not to mention tactical changes to the team made by rafa such as gerrard playing further forward or even from the right and carragher switching to centre back
As soon as he won the Champions League with Houllier's team, he set about changing it - for the worse!

Not true. The team that lost in Athens was better than the team that won in Istanbul, and the team that finished second in the league,in 2009, with our highest ever points total, was better than either of them.
And there arent's many managers who could have won it with the squad he inherited from Houllier. I liked Ged, and he did good things for us, but his squad legacy wasn't that great.
Nobidy gave us a prayer of winning the CL, with that squad.
3. it all went wrong before rafa's last season.
quite simply, it went wrong when the management decided they knew who our transfer targets should be more than rafa.
eg, buying keane and not buying barry when rafa only wanted barry.
what's the point of developing a style of play, and then identifying players who will fit that system and style, if the managers go and buy someone else instead?
that and forcing the sale of our best players.
should never have even thought about selling Alonso. Whose idea was that in any case?

Benitez said he always knew Alonso was going to go back to Spain. He pre-empted it by choosing the moment when he thought it was best for LFC. Alonso wasn’t very happy about it, but that doesn’t necessarily make it a bad decision.
Whether or not that’s true, a lot of Liverpool fans are puzzled by how we managed to be a two-man team (which didn’t include Alonso), to selling our best player (whch apparently was Alonso). A lot of other things happened around that time. We lost Hyypia and Arbeloa, as well, but apparently that had no effect. It was all down to selling Alonso
Rafa could be infuriatingly stubborn sometimes but there's no doubt he was Liverpool through and through. I'd say the truest of the two statements was 1 although 1 happening rested solely on those in power thinking that 2 was true.
I'd welcome Rafa back anytime!
Number 2. Its harder to get back in the champions league when you drop out of it. He replaced Alonso with an injured Italian which was a big mistake and cracks were appearing in his final year.
T Bone, do you think if our new owners came in in Rafas last season and decided to stick with him as manager things would be different to what they are now?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
I do. Look at Rafa's net spend in his last 2 seasons. If he was not battling the owners and didn't get bitter and had a budget i think we would be challenging for the title
I'm going to go with number 4.
What difference does it make? The past is gone, nothing can change it. Time has moved on. Why keep raking it up?
Ifs and buts. If fergie was not paying debts for the glazers we would be the bestest team in the world eva!!!!
Managment is not for when things are good, but when things are tough. Fergie has been managing in a financial situation which considering his success should annoy him. He battled through and remained competitive.
Rafa was concerned about himself. Praise that if you like. Also his greatest achievement is still with someone elses team.
As soon as he won the Champions League with Houllier's team, he set about changing it - for the worse!

We won that champions league mainly down to Benitez's superb tactics in Europe and fantastic individual displays in different games from players like Gerrard, Dudek, Carragher, Garcia etc.
Time has moved on. Why keep raking it up?
