You make your own luck in football
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Not always we were lucky they cant take a penalty we never made that luck.
We are lucky Mahrez cant take a corner, we never made that luck either.
Over the moon with the result but I wont get carried away cos I saw just how fortunate we were today.
But then we have been unlucky with injuries so maybe we deserve a bit of luck
We didn't deserve to win today, city are a class above us so we probably defended as well as we could but at the same time their 3 big chances came from individual mistakes which should have all ended up being goals.
If they scored the penalty, aguero didn't hit the post when sanchez passed it straight to a city player and gundogan missed an open goal I dont think anyone would be saying we defended well

They're a class above so you can understand why we would not go toe-to-toe so overall a great result.
BUT is this a genuine tactics or anomaly? More often than not we lose that game as we did to Liverpool.
So credit to the team and Mourinho for result but to be justified you need to win more of those than lose and so far Mourinho has lost more.

This is it, for me. It's not like City missed their chances because Spurs defended well and made those chances difficult. They were literally just open goals that City flubbed (you forgot the Aguero one that he inexplicably poked wide from 2 yards out too).
I really don't see why the manager should take credit for pot luck. I'll happily give him credit for games like the 5-0 against Burnley when the team and system overwhelmed the opposition. But I don't think the win against City relied on a good system. It relied on a moment of individual inspiration from Bergwijn - I suppose you could say good man management from Mourinho to play him early and give him the confidence to try that shot, which is fair enough - and a truckload of luck, which simply isn't down to the manager.
Yes, I'm anti-Mourinho, but I'd be saying it of any manager, just like I was when Chelsea under Di Matteo fluked their way to the Champions League. If it had been a triumph of defensive management, then City wouldn't have been in a position to miss 2 open goals, hit the woodwork twice and miss a penalty. The tiniest of margins separated that game from a 2-0 "Mourinho masterclass" and a 0-5 disaster, and I don't think Mourinho can fairly take credit for the opposition's mistakes in missing chances since they weren't missed chances due to the system or moments of good defending.
I'm aware this is not a popular opinion, mind you

I'll be honest, one of my bugbears in football is when it's said a team doesn't deserve a win because they are outplayed. We definitely deserved a win because City did not take their chances and we did, but I think we can all acknowledge that they were in many ways the better team and outplayed us.

I get what you mean - it's not like the team with more shots and possession/a more attacking outlook should always win. That would remove the potential for different approaches to the game, and would remove the romance of stuff like cup giant-killings and make it impossible for weaker teams to ever win a game.
I think there's degrees to it, though. And I also don't think it's necessarily as simple as "Spurs deserved to win because they took their chances and City didn't." That game was absolutely dominated by City and they missed a good 5 chances that were absolutely gilt-edged, and Spurs relied much more on luck than defensive strength.

It doesn't mean we weren't lucky in the sense that they dominated and on another day would put many of those chances to bed. But deserved it we did.
The only time I feel like a team deserved a win when they didn't get one is when they've had unfortunate decisions go against them. That was not the case yesterday however. They should have been reduced to 10 men early on if anything.
We deserved winning on the basis of them not taking advantage so argument is why do they deserve it for being not being clinical in front of goal.
Equally it was nowhere near a masterclass from us. Conceding 19 shots and only taking 3 is not a sustainable tactic and will ultimately rely on luck.
If we create 2 chances all game the finger pointing will go to the players for not taking their chances which is outrageous. Nobody should be scrutinised like that.
I understand it might be how we need to play against better opposition but you know what....
It's okay to win a game having being dominated and it doesn't need to be branded a masterclass just because you walked away with 3 points.

True, although we did exactly the same under Pochettino at the Etihad and really got lucky with the draw. They completely outplayed us and we managed to be clinical enough to score our 2, plus benefited a little from the VAR.

Hope the rumours of a dier and wanyama midfield arent true
#THFC: Lloris (C), Aurier, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Tanganga, Dier, Winks, Ndombele, Sessegnon, Lucas, Son.
Subs: Gazzainga, Sanchez, Cirkin, Skipp, Gedson, Dele, Parrott
What’s the point of Lamela when these are the sort of games we need him to help for rotation
Curious to see Winks as an 8
Unless its Ndombele as a 10 for some reason
Dier instead of Gedson the made up rumours where half right
