Carrick needs someone playing close to him in a deep lying regista role so that he can maintain possession neatly with his short passes. With Anderson and Cleverley, who look to bomb forward, Carrick is left dwelling on the ball far too long in his search for runners ahead of him (note that Welbeck and Valencia were pretty static in the first half). With Scholes alongside him, Carrick feels more calm as there is always a safety outlet for him, a person who always makes himself available for a pass when Carrick is put under pressure.

Agree 100%.
As for why he doesn't dictate play himself, I think he feels he has too much defensive responsibility to search for the space to play as a regista. He is more like Busquets than Xavi. Would be at his best in a midfield 3.
I do think he's very underrated. He's not flashy but i don't know if there is anyone better than him at getting himself in a position to protect the back 4, make interceptions and start attacks. He is the only central midfielder i would have in my strongest line up every time.
Carrick is top class, Man Utd are a counter attacking team so he doesn't get enough recognition
For me he should be first choice for England, him alongside Rodwell and Wilshere are the best ball possession players in England
In fact i think he was a bit more expansive in his first 2 seasons. Both he and Scholes got around 6-7 goals each and hit some screamers.
Since then he has become too much of a CDM. I don't know whether it because SAF has told him to perform that role or what the reason maybe but after his first 2 seasons i though he will carry on and get us 10 goals a season regularly.
Carrick is the best opposition player I have seen live at the Emirates, Xavi/Messi were fantastic but Carrick has got just got that Rolls Royce passing ability he passes the ball so cleanly and effortlessly of either foot and defensively he's vastly underrated
if Carrick and Anderson are meant to be world class/good enough for the united team, why does everyone complain about our central midfield then?
Cant have it both ways.
Sure you get comments that Carrick can only playing a 3 man midfield so that he gets time on the ball, but its not like other top CM's need that. Or comments that SAF has converted Anderson into a defensive midfielder, but surely if Anderson had more touch and appetite in front of goal he wouldnt have had to.

IMO United's midfield in recent years has always managed to look good against Arsenal by taking advantage of the hapless Song. Last season at The Emirates in particular.
Carrick is very underrated. He thrives on the movement of players in front of him (Scholes also thrives on the movement of others), hence why particularly in the 06/07 many goals were scored by Saha, Ronaldo, Rooney, because they gave Carrick options up front, but if nobody is making those diagonal runs or getting into positions to make themselves available he does him no favours.
Since 06/07 he has gradually become more of a true CDM and positionally as well as tactically he is much more astute, he certainly makes more interceptions then others around him.
To get the best out of Carrick he must be paired with players comfortable with the ball and aware of space around them, a Scholes of course or an Anderson (that may surprise a few but Ando's passing has improved and his awareness is very very good). Carrick thrives on two things, movement from the forwards and a partner to 'circulate' the possession of the ball.
In an era of football where the control of 'space' is more apparent/important then ever, Carrick controls the space around him as good as anyone in Europe.
Alex Song is a liability glad he's gone no surprise our midfield have helped our defence thus keeping 3 clean sheet
Even so just watching Carrick live his one/two touch passing, control/movement he's a special player imo
Gutted we didn't sign him from Pompey we were a pen away from signing him, we pulled out last min he joined Spurs
I always felt like Carrick was/is an Arsenal type player. I think if he had gone to Arsenal they would have maybe won something in the past 7 years. Wenger has admitted his regret in not signing him when he had the chance.
His style is not a typical Man Utd style midfielder but he is such an 'aware' player that he can get away with it.

Song is a great player.
---------------
He's a terrible defensive midfielder, can pick a pass tho
He is good, not a 'great' player. If he played the way he did vs QPR, Chelsea in CL, Roma, Shalke a little more often, then he'd be in that bracket.
But seeing those kinds of performances kinda take your breath away and is what makes me love him.
