I agree it takes a lot of fitness but ask a tennis player yo run around a pitch for five hours a game with six games in twelve days and he'll faint at the thought of it.

?????????? That comment makes no sense? That is exactly what tennis players do, footballers have never done anything like that!
ManUtdDareDevil...............................United would have been allowed to field a team, from their squad, they chose not to!!
I too have played both games at a good competitive level, I can tell you that although different sports, the level of fitness required in tennis is every bit as much as required in top class football.
Tennis players often practise 6-7 hours a day & their season is just as arduous as a footballers. Remember also that they travel around the world from tournament to tournament, which in itself is very demanding!
London Dave..............Footballers can be substituted if they are carrying a knock, tennis players cannot. They also train for around 2-3 hours for a maximum of 4 days a week...................thus allowing them most afternoons free to relax and recuperate.
Bristol Spur........................................Obviously not a sportsperson then?
I can tell you that although different sports, the level of fitness required in tennis is every bit as much as required in top class football.
==============================
This is true but the amount of energy that each sport takes out of you per match is heavily weighted in terms of football.
It's not even close.
newWayne...............................So you're saying that pro footballers who train 4-5 days a week, 10 months of the year, aren't as fit as Murray?
SERIOUSLY??
________________________________________
Where do say that footballers are not as fit as tennis players?
As for your comment, yes football is indeed made up of two halves of 45 minutes, with a 15 minute break at half time.
For that 45 minutes how much actual playing time do you think there is with the ball in play? 90? 85? 75? 65minutes??
None of those, on average the ball is in play only 61.5 minutes in every PL game!!! So that is nearly 30 minutes rest for players!!
Andy Murray's schedule this year is 23 tournaments, some like the Grand Slam's are often over 12-14 days so his season is between 6-7 months long, with a lot of intercontinental travel..........................
It makes a lot of sense. Tennis has a small court so of course they are able to do it for longer and more frequent as its short bursts. Comparing tennis players doing it for five hours and six times in twelve days to what a football player does makes no sense for reasons I've stated above.
Greaves - to answer your question I play 2 best
of 3 set tennis matches a week for my club no problem but when I last tried to play 90 minutes for my mates team I nearly died. Complete different types of fitness!
Didi.......................................This is true but the amount of energy that each sport takes out of you per match is heavily weighted in terms of football.
It's not even close.

.I have often seen PL players coming off the pitch as fresh as daisy's & not looking shattered at all.
The footballers also have an advantage in that they are part of a team, on the tennis court you are on your own, physically & mentally.
Last night for instance Murray & Djokovic had a rally of 54 shots, played with venom & all over the court. This was a new record in the US Open.............both players looked relieved when the point was won!
Most of you however have missed the main thrust of my argument, clubs complain about the number of games played, I.E. Two games a week etc, well that is why they have 25 man squads, to rotate etc.
They argue for a mid season break, why? So the players can rest.....................?? Don't believe it, most of the clubs like United, Chelsea etc will be off somewhere for a lucrative friendly match & that is what will happen.
None of those, on average the ball is in play only 61.5 minutes in every PL game!!! So that is nearly 30 minutes rest for players!!
==================================
Like when the defenders have to run up to the other end of the pitch for corners, that sort of rest?
I'm trying to give you you the benfit of the doubt, but you clearly have no real understanding of the physiology involved behind either sport.
IIRC, the average point length last night was 6 shots. That's 3 shots each. Tennis relies on lots of short bursts of energy with small amounts of rest between them. Football is much more of a blend between aerobic and anaerobic work, without the regular opportunities to rest that tennis provides.
A game like last night is an anomaly for a tennis player, most of their matches won't last half as long and require a lot less physical effort. If you disagree though, that's fine. I can't force you to be right.
Bristol Spur......................................Of course they are different types of fitness, but Murray for instance can run a mile in under 5 minutes because that is part of Lendl's regime, and he doesn't need to dive to win either!
My point again is that footballers whinge & complain of tiredness, when in reality a lot of them do not earn the money they are paid!
The difference is that one is a contact sport and the other isn't. Footballers don't play as often as the chance of injuries is higher for this simple reason.
They're different types of fitness but both Murray and a pro footballer will be as equally as fit as each other.
Didi..................................................Considering I did 6.5 years in the RAF as a physical training instructor, I think I might just have the tiniest inkling about physiology in sport.
I do find your remark patronising & demeaning as you need to know a person's background before jumping to conclusions.
BahamasSpurs! At last, someone with a bit of commonsense!!
Pretty obvious I would have thought greaves! Suprised this thread is even this long!
Did..........................................Like when the defenders have to run up to the other end of the pitch for corners, that sort of rest?
Hmm....... whenever a corner is awarded, most teams defenders will only be at most 40-50 yards away and its normally a gentle jog for them!!!
Getting back from a corner might necessitate a more brisk return, but nothing a very fit person should be concerned about!
Bahamas..................................Me too!
I think a lot of football fans do not like Andy Murray because of his alleged comments about not supporting England. These people need to get a life, he was only 18 when he made the comments, he has since said he regretted making them!
It makes a lot of sense. Tennis has a small court so of course they are able to do it for longer and more frequent as its short bursts. Comparing tennis players doing it for five hours and six times in twelve days to what a football player does makes no sense for reasons I've stated above.

What a load of nonsense, technically the two sports have been compared scientifically many times using different methods and on the whole have been found to be similar in intensity. There are loads of comparisons of the fitness levels required for various sports out there, cross country skiing generally tends to come out on top in most studies.
Just for some general info about distance covered:
Murray would have run around 4 miles last night in just under 5 hours.
A midfielder on average runs around 6 miles in 90 minutes.

most football fans i know couldnt care less about the england team, so i doubt that is the reason.. it was more that he seemed to be a bit of an ar5ehole, whereas now he seems a much better guy, and thus is more popular.
tennis players get much more recovery time during the game, breaks between games and points
net serves,2nd serves theres lots of time wasted doing nothing much, footballs much more intense and the 60 yard full on sprints arent required in tennis

That's still only half true. He was having banter with an interviewer which got taken completely out of context by the over-sensitive idiots who hated him because he didn't smile his way around the court.
I think the only thing he regrets is the lack of a sense of humour some people possess. All that incident did was make him withdraw from the press to the point where he clams up so much when interviewed so he doesn't say anything that can be taken out of context again.
The same people who criticise his demeanour are more than likely responsible for it too.
I play tennis twice a week, over the course of the summer I played every single night. When Iplay football I can barely walk, my body is in pain for days. The reason I play tennis is because after my injury and due to my fitness levels because of it, I am unable to play football at a good pace, whereas I can play tennis for hours. I think this point is a very very obvious one. I like your article because it created debate amongst many members but surely youcan see how your rargument is wrong?
Don Vito that's what I'm saying you fool. They are about equal overall. What I'm arguing is its nonsense to compare six games in twelve days and say oh youse tennis players play mo're so are fitter, footballers can only play two games in a week etc.
Please learn to read before jumping into your mouth with both feet.
TOOR thinks his own personal experience is significant.
There's a very simple way to compare the fitness required for various sports, take a number of professional athletes in each field and measure their fitness levels
Fortunately there are people in this world with enough brains to have already done several studies rather than posting nonsense on a forum. All you have to do TOOR is go out there and find them, should take less time than it does posting carp here.
This argument is ridiculous, top professional athletes are specifically fit for the sport they play....its all relevant! Andy Murray wont train to be able to run for 90 minutes as much as a footballer wont train to be able to create the short burst of movement and constant change of direction that a tennis player would train for!
Its like comparing Bolt to Farah! neither can do what the other does but doesn't mean one is anymore 'Fitter' than the other!
Stupid discussion!!
Exactly. Therefore the ridiculous suggestion that footballers are soft because tennis players can play six matches in twelve days is wrong. Game set and match
I'm nor gonna waste my time arguing with an idiot Don so you can find somebody on your own wavelength if that's what you wish to do.
