I know I was at first, I was scared of not knowing if a convict was going to be accepted so I just sat on the reserves bench for a while working out different characters and who were the good guys and who wore the black hats etc.

Souths.
May I say well done, this site has needed a kick up the ar,sorry will rephrase that, should have said backside to get it going.
I have got a couple of ideas about the expansionists v the keep it in the Lancs & Yorks corridor for an article. But I want a twist on it with the views of people in Aus on the same subject.
I first thought about this on Sat morning when I was watching a Union match in the morning between Tasmania and someone called Northland
This is the first time I have ever seen Tasmania mentioned in any form of Rugby and this made me come to the following obversation.
Rugby League in Aus seems to be predominantly NSW and Queensland with Melbourne Storm the only one I know who come from outside these states.

This leads me to the following question,is there any Pro RL in Victoria,South Austrailia,West Austrailia and Northern Territories ?.
Or more importantly do the NRL have the mindset of the British RL to expand to areas at the expense of heartland clubs ?.
Though I myself think that the NRL is so strong it is the outsiders who have to plead for inclusion to the fold, not as the UK where it seems the RL bend over backwards to try and expand the game.

Mr Cheese.

I knew you would be the one to catch me out, suddenly realised the Raiders are in Victoria, but deepdown I think you know what I am getting at.

yes, i wasnt suggesting anything, just indicating another club outside the traditional areas.

the NRL will expand by 2 clubs soon. possibly both outside traditional areas.

Mr Cheese.

What I was meaning was the NRL seem to have clubs from outside the heartlands queing up whilst the RL have to heavily subsidise clubs from outside the corridor to keep them going. Cheers.

well, the money in the game down under just totally dwarfs the super league money. the reasons for that are many and various and nothing is gonna change soon on that front.

You must have been watching the ITM Cup Rugby Union match - Northland v Tasman (northern province of NZ South Island)... not to be confused with Tasmania.

There are no Pro RL teams in Tassie, SA, WA and NT although there used to be the Adelaide Rams in SA and the Western Reds who are around in the S G Ball Cup (under 18s) with the intention to get reinstated into an expanded NRL. NT is also more AFL oriented (like Vic, Tas, SA and WA) however there are RL connections there but no pro teams.

Cheese, yes the Canberra Raiders are ACT of course...but that's a tiny city/territory completely landlocked within NSW... apart from the naval base on the coast at Jervis Bay.

Generally, the rural areas of NSW/Qld have strong 'Group Divisions'...hence players from Wagga, Temora, Denilquin, Griffith, Hay, etc in NSW tend to gravitate to Canberra. Closer to the border with Victoria (and in a few areas of southern NSW like Albury-Wodonga and Echuca-Moama; which are closer to Melbourne) you have a strong AFL as well as RL catchment. In fact many current stars of both codes are from these southern NSW areas.

posted on 19/7/11

Actually Echuca (Vic) is more AFL... Albury(north of Murray in NSW)-Wodonga(south of river in Vic) is both codes.
