Admins, Pete suffers under megalomania. Stop him now.

I seem to recall Admin1 calling Pete "the glue that holds this site together".

"What was wrong with Manninger?"

Bad hair mostly.

Couldn't disagree more.

Stunning individual.

What was wrong with Manninger?
---------------------------------------

He used to come running out without any idea of what he was doing. Lehmann used to do the same but he was far more selective.

Manninger was the one who was supposed to takeover from Seaman. But Arsene does not have patience with young keepers who make silly mistakes.

In fact did you see his face after Vermealen made that stupid challenge?

I was a bit young so I don't remember Manninger so well. I remember him saving a penalty in a shoot out once but I can't remember when or who it was against.

Yeah, I think it was Carling Cup (league cup) tie. Can't remember myself. But Mannaninger has had good mid-table career since then.

Manninger seems to be well loved at Juve. He'd never displace Buffon in a million years but he's a decent understudy.

My point was Julio Cesar. One of the best keepers in the world and the right age for goalkeepers - 33.

Goes to QPR. Just ridiculous when we have had goalkeeping issues since Lehmann.

Julio Cesar has been shocking the last 2 seasons....

I won't get into a 'yes he' has and 'no he hasn't' blame game.

However a lot of negative focus is put on keepers after Mourinho leaves a club.

Mourinho plays a very defensive formation. Ultra robotic. Any new manager first job is usually to open the play out a bit because managers replacing Mournhio are required to change the 'anti-football' Mourinho tag. This puts a lot of pressure on ex Mourinho goalkeepers. They haven't suddenly got worse. They just aren't protected as well as before. Cech is a prime example of that. It takes time to settle under a new system.

Look at Vito now! Whats the difference between his game today and a couple of years ago when he looked so bad that Arsene shipped him out with a view to a sale? Bould's defensive organization.

Vito doesn't need to make extravagant saves anymore. He just needs to manage the game, keep concentration for a couple of saves a game and make no silly errors. Thats why he looks better! An experienced keeper does those things better. Thats why top teams tend to have experienced goalkeepers by choice. There are exceptions when you can find that sort of maturity in a young keeper. But its generally an exception rather than the rule.
