money

What money? Liverpool and Newcastle have virtually very little chance of getting into the CL just now, even Spurs are struggling, those four places are pretty well bought every season now. So the best they can hope for is Europa League, so why not make a good go of it.

UEFA have made the Europa League a joke competition, that's why:

1. Half a season of games to win it.

2. A huge amount of trips to the arris-end of 'Europe'.

3.Thursday/Sunday

4. A huge financial gulf from the CL meaning the Europa winners get less than the 4th placed CL group side.

5. The final insult of CL failures being parachuted in after you have slogged to get to the KO rounds

Sandy.............................My sentiments exactly. I believe in putting out strong teams in ALL Competitions!!

Because the premier league and finishing in the top 4 is more important than winning the Europa League. Sad but true!

But Liverpool and Newcastle are not going to be in the CL for years in all probability, so what`s your point. As I said the Top four places in the prem have to be pretty well bought by a sugar daddy these days.

Who cares what OTHER clubs are doing ??

Spurs are playing Lazio. Who are no joke.
The Arry-esque Europa line-ups of last season will NOT suffice for these two games.

I think this is the most damaging part of the competition. Sure, it can give some tasty ties in the knockout stages but it just devalues everything that the teams who slogged it out in the group stages have done to get there.

Europe League is a distraction to most clubs. Look at Harry. Didnt he play weakened teams in it. He knows if he doesnt keep up the good form in the Premier League, they wont even qualify for next seasons competition. Its also a distraction playing Sunday Thursday, Sunday Thursday. Most of the opponents are in far flung Easten European countries/cities, mentally and physically tiring out players so they'd rather play the youth/reserves and keep the 1st team for the PL. Im strictly talking about Prem clubs btw. Its treated different in other leagues.

Agree with everything you've said.

Countries having FOUR teams in the CHAMPIONS League when you can only have one team who are CHAMPIONS every season is ridiculous!

It's devalued the ELeague no end.

And yes, all answers are MONEY!

Mr Chelsea :

That is the skill of the manager then, is it not.

TBF to Arry he almost got away with it apart from the PAOK game. But then again, given the KO stages raise the opponent std, and the Spurs collapse in the final third of the PL, perhaps twas a blessing in disguise the group stage was messed up.

Cups dont matter to Harry.

we got embarassed in every single cup competition we entered with him as manager, pretty much.

The CL has always been a thinly-veiled attempt to have a UEFA super league for the haves. And by definition creates an arms race for the have-nots. Some of us think the old competition formats should be restored.

xiuxiuejar is spot on with this comment:

"Because the premier league and finishing in the top 4 is more important than winning the Europa League. Sad but true!"

When Spurs were mid-table, we were happy to play in the EL (whatever it was called then, i cant remember), but now we (along with Liverpool) consider that our clubs belong in the CL, we see the EL as a 2nd rate competion - which is basically is.

Its further degraded as this due to FIFA allowing clubs who fail in the CL to drop down into the EL.

In short, the clubs considered as the Top 6 (in no particular order), City, United, Spurs, Arsenal, Chelsea & Liverpool, we are disappointed when we only qualify for the EL, whereas the rest of the league would consider it an achievement.

And until they allow an extra place into the CL, for the winners of the EL, this will continue.

I cannot agree mate, every competition Sprus enter has to be taken seriously. Sorry I am old school, if Spurs are playing in a cup competition then they have to play to win. I don`t go in for all this nonsense, but it may affect getting in the CL through a prem position. The CL positions are pretty well sewn up before the season starts, such is the stranglehold a few clubs have on the top competition. Platini no way wants that changing, so the rest of us need to get on with whatever else is on offer.

sandy,

I'm pretty much old school too, but with the strain of all comps, league, League Cup, FA Cup & European Cup, there has to be some kind of priority listing, whereby if you go all out to win them all, you're not really going to give your main priority the best chance of coming off.

I'll be honest, whilst as a fan i want to win every match (including pre-season friendlies), i would much prefer we took the EL more lightly than we would the domestic cups & league position.

The problem you have with this (my) approach, is if you play the priorities game, inevitably you could come away with nothing (as we well know).

However, until FIFA give the EL more respect, and in turn clubs like ours will too, my stance will be the same for the foreseeable future.

And if i'm strictly honest, i would rarther we werent in the EL than be in it. The only benefit being that it means the club finished higher in the league the previous year to qualify in the first place.

The solution is so simple. Everyone except Platini can see that the only way to make the Europa League a competition worth taking seriously is to make CL qualification the prize for winning it.
