Midfield approach?

Cheik Tiote and Fellaini are miles behind Carrick. MILES

Tiote is a very average player, I watch Newcastle a fair bit and he gives the ball away alot and isn't great technically. He has energy but there's more to football than pressing opponents.

United should go nowhere near him.

Do u think that with the kind of tackles Tiote makes in PL, he will get away with it in Europe with card happy refs.

Also do u know that Carrick made more tackles and more interceptions than Tiote last season

ohh ya, and just 15-20% of the fouls Tiote made.

Watch the Newcastle Vs Utd game at St James last season and tell me who is the better player.

I must say there is a lot of carrick loving going on . Carrick is a decent player nothing more nothing less. He gives his all but he never was a top top midfielder. When u c he can't even get into the English team there something wrong.

I think every United fan would love to have Toure in our midfield but to me players like Tiote and Fellaini are very good but still way off the level of Toure. Toure was a beast during the Real game the other day, he looked about 10 ft tall and time and time again ran straight through the Real midfield as if they weren't even there.

Who out there would you say is the closest thing to Toure, both in physical presence and ability?

Are people really suggesting Tiote is better than Carrick?

Very different players but I would definitely not swap Carrick for Tiote. I've been very pleased with Carrick's offensive contributions so far this season, seems to be far more involved, his pass to Nani for Scholes's goal the other day was great.

Jack, that has nothing to do with Carricks ability, more the England managers incompetence.

I like Fellaini. He'd augment our squad nicely, with a physical presence that exceeds any of our midfielders together with a good technique and brain. I could see him forming good partnerships with pretty much all of the existing players, and in a variety of different formations.

No I rate Fellaini, I just feel we need someone better. I still think Toure is far better, but then he's probably the best player in the world in his role.

Barca?

What's that all about

Isn't it just 4-4-2 with CMs who can't tackle?

posted on 20/9/12

Nobody is on the level of Toure 1982 so there is no poiint in talking about that, but I'd say Fellaini is the closest thing.

And nobody is saying tiote is 'better' than Carrick, he would probably be a suitable partner for him in fact.

You see the OP simply can't help the situation. He seems to want the problem of steel solved yet is already decided, and I feel blindly, on carrick being part of the solution. You don't just solve problems this way. You have to be open-minded. The best place to have "steel" in midfield is in the holding position not in the no 10 or elsewhere. So the solution lies in dealing with the carrick situation. He simply isn't good enough for Man Utd, and moreso when put under pressure. Did you notice how many balls he gave away in critical positions last night? Putting pressure on the defence he supposedly protects.

Reconn's only comment I've ever agreed with we actually don't have a midfielder who can tackle or win a 50\50 (unless Fletch gets fit)

1st touch, best comment I have seen regarding Carrick in a while

.................

yes, there were one or two.

But not as many as Scholes.

lol first touch

If he gave away the ball last night it was literally once. He had a very good game and to say he isn't good enough for United is one of the most stupid things i've read on here in ages.
He didn't put the team under ANY pressure last night. Jeez, without him who knows how badly we would have played.

---------------
Once at the beginning of the game from memory

He's the best passer at the club. Quit talking utter nonsense, oh and the number 10 is not part of the midfield. Do you even watch football?

I didn't realise he said not good enough. I think its more a case of he isn't what we need for a 2 man midfield.

* or would be better with a holding player opposed to being the holding player.

The thing that confuses me if people talk about Carrick as though he is Cleverly or Andersons age and has potential, what is he, 30 years old now?

I pray we don't have another Scholes or Giggs on our hands.

Busby

30 is not old in DM terms! He can play at this level for a good 3 or 4 years to come, maybe longer.
Xavi is playing at the top level at 32 despite having summer after summer playing nearly every game for Spain.

And Pirlo is 33.

Are you ok? Pirlo a defensive midfielder? were is he doing this back tracking and getting stuck it work at? milan? juve? And xavi?

You keep confusing yourself. Next thing you will be calling modric a defensive midfielder because when spurs are attacking he takes the ball of the defenders.

Pirlo and Xavi are perfect examples Rob, both similar players to Carrick and have been given a ball winner beside them, they are not the legs, they are the brains
