I've always felt that Waghorn is a bit overrated by our fans. Having said that I'm not sure I'd want to sell him - especially when we invested so much money in him.
Joby..........you could see from the 1st game 2 seasons ago against Swansea City when he came on that he changed the game and looked the most direct player on the pitch.
His awareness, touch and positioning were top drawer............his goal ratio that season for a young player shone through.
When Pearson left he was played out of position and lost his confidence by being played out wide on the right. Why? Stick him in front of goal with a regular partner and watch the goals fly in given that he gets enough service. Trust me.
Season ticket holder in SK2.
During the warm up before the game, when the players are shooting at the portable goal, my wife and I always put our coffees on the ground when Waggy shoots as more often than not, the ball ends up somewhere in SK2.
He has potential, but at the moment appears to be going for an audition as a Jonny Wilkinson look alike.
Think the reason he is so well liked by the fans is that he seems to have a good rapport with us.
Dont want to sell him but if we are offered our money back, I am sure we could buy better.
Forget the warm-ups..................sure, his lack of starts has wrecked his confidence after a hefty price-tag move for an un-proven, young striker. Hence, his eagerness to be quick and snatch at his lack of chances when he gets a few mins here and there. He knows it. Just give him a run and good, regular supply and watch the goals start to come.
There's no doubt that Waggy's effort and commitment does endear him to fans and can, occasionally, cloud opinion on him.
I think the best way to use Martyn Waghorn is as an impact player if you're looking to change a game but as a starter, I don't think he's consistent enough. If you looked at his shots to goals ratio, I don't think it would be as good as it should be.
I wouldn't sell him but maybe a loan spell at a top end League 1 club for the first half of the season would increase his confidence and maybe we could benefit in the business end of the season.
So we should change most of our team to accommodate Waghorn? Surely he should fit in with the team not the other way round?
I agree with the above comment, he is over rated by our fans. People like him for the same reasons they loved Hume, because he runs around a lot. People moan about Yakubu (not necessarily many people but i have seen many comments) but he scores goals, but it seems if you run around like a 4 year with ADHD buzzing on sunny d and a pack of fruit pastels then you're classed as a legend.
The time Waggy goes on loan elsewhere......you may aswell say "Goodbye".
He came here from Sunderland reserves don't forget, done the biz in a 1st team amongst older, proven professionals and merited his place. It was a big step up for the team that season, let alone him. He looked at home and was.
He got injured and when he came back it was in fits and starts, different partners, out of position............no wonder his game was shot.
Get him a proven, regular partner and see him blossom! A possible cult hero in the making.
Will it be at Leicester City or against Leicester City?!!
Waghorn .........stay!
LCFCJimbo................not saying we should change most of the team to accomodate him.........just give him a regular position that suits his style, game....call it what you like, but just give him the supply and i'm sure he will net just as regularly as anyone at the club presently.
Get another decent striker who he can play off and he will be in his element, convinced of it.
Maybe when he stops blasting over the bar with every other shot !
We are interestingly divided on this, which means it must be close call. I do recognise that all that folk have said about Waghorn's merits. But for me he is still not quite good enough for the team I hope we will be fielding next season.
For me, Waghorn is overrated. Sure, he gives his all, but when he's near goal, he just tries to smack it as hard as he can. He's scored some good crucial goals, but he could have scored a lot more goals with a bit more composure.
Sure, composure comes with age, but playing him week in week out is a risk when he's not at the moment, consistent enough. Loan him out for a season to someone who's a lower side in the Champ and see how he does.
For me, he scored a couple of goals early in his loan spell which made him some form of cult hero.
I'm not doubting his commitment, but he's similar to Hume. Heart on his sleave, just not good enough finisher.
Plus in a 4-3-3 formation with 1 leading striker, you're always gonna play someone like Yakubu over Waghorn.
Sven is quoted in today's LM that Waggy is very much in his plans, and if we had an important game today, he would definitely play.
He eneds to go on loan next season to Sheffield Utd.
Bag himself 20+ goals and then come back into the championship with them and do the same.
A bit like Cleverley has done for Man Utd, Waggy needs to build his confidene starting in League one next season.
Just concerned that if he goes out on loan elsewhere and does the biz, then he may well want to stay with that club - just like he did when he came here!
We would be the losers then - but - as has been said here....he needs to find his goals quickly to establish a regular starting place.
It'll be interesting to see what Sven does with Waghorn (and several others) after a full pre-season of training. It is possible that the likes of Waghorn would be rejuvenated after it - and that Sven might have got his point across about much-needed changes to his game (specifically using the ball more intelligently).
PLay The Pitch, Waghorn wanted to stay at Sunderland originally. It was only when they told him he could go he came back to us.
