Controversial view you have. Too good a player to leave out IMHO.
Needs to prove he's worth his place. Can't see Brendan putting him in when Lucas, Sahin & Allen are fit. I prefer Shelvey at the moment too.
When you pass sideways and backwards you lose the ball less. When you are a penetrative player you lose the ball more. Without penetrative players, you don't score many goals, which has been a problem for us this season.
Thing about Gerrard is that he always seems to play his best against Everton, bloody annoying!
TOOR the age old excuse for stevies poor pass completion. Measured possesion is more like it. I hate it when people make excuses for Gerrard. Why not look up the pass stats for Mata Carzola who also seem to play much higher up.
Fact is Gerrard is living off his reputation rather than performances. If he had assists to show for it maybe that would hold more water.
He's not living off reputation, he's done well this season, more consistent than his last two years. Although he has had a couple of shockers. He did well in the first half but when you can't score, the penetrative players will get the ball more and try things which get more risky as the games go on and they're the one's who'll be noticed as having a bad game, when in fact they're the one's who could win the game, whilst the one's who may not, will get praised for passing sideways and backwards.
He's got two goals and one assist in six games. That's every other game, he provides a goal. Penetration. It's a shame we lack more like him.
Gerrard lacks consistency nowadays, but we still rely on him to create and score, who else is doing it with any regularity?
Until other players prove better than Gerrard he has to be picked.
Rodgers is not picking him on reputation (if he were, than Carra would be playing every game too).
He is picking him because in training and games he shows he is one of our best players still.
When that changes he won't get picked any more.
Gerrard has been very inconsistent since returning from injury, he blows very hot and cold.
He played poorly today, certainly in an attacking sense. He tried to play the killer ball which didn't come off too for him.
Given that the central area of midfield is arguably our strongest part of the squad, i would like to see the manager at least take him off if he's having a bad day, or dropping him if he feels it necessary. We didn't have Shelvey as an option, but (with plenty of hindsight) moving Allen forward and bring Henderson on could have been an option.
It would send the right message out I think, because at the moment for too long Stevie plays one decent game, then by his standards plays poorly.
We will win nothing whilst Steven Gerrard is in the team. There I said it. He affected the the rhythm of the team the other night and today was not good enough...again.
He plays one good game in five...if we are lucky. I have wrote on here many times saying the same thing and all the Gerrard lovers will break their necks replying 'how can you say that' and 'you're not a true red', blah blah blah. Well look at the facts. Gerrard plays, Liverpool play rubbish.
Rodgers wants a Barca style of plays which pretty much requires a good level of consistency for not only the 90 mins but week in week out. Gerrard simply goes not give you that. Rodgers needs to grow a pair and drop him. In fact, I don't we are too far away from that day.
"Well look at the facts. Gerrard plays, Liverpool play rubbish."
Or don't make up facts and actually look at the facts. Every second game, Gerrard produces a goal. Two goals and an assist in six games. We struggle for goals because we don't have enough penetration, replacing one of those players who can and has provided it, in the six games so far this season, will mean we struggle even more.
Well done TOOR. Knew you'd be the first one in to defend him.
He has been rubbish for 3-4 years now. Unless he has a time machine, he isn't getting younger. And he is getting worse as the seasons roll by. Admit it....he's a has been.
Dropping him could give him a kick up the backside. My guess is like players before him the England captaincy wears heavy,
to paraphrase his own words, if your not performing consistently, then you can have no complaints when your out the team. This may provide him with the challenge he needs to start playing like he can. If he can't, then we may soon witness the great man start to take a bit more of a back seat in the not so distant future.
Sentiment shouldn't come in to it either.
Love SG but he is a shadow of his former self...fact!
Gerrard's starting to show his age and his past injuries will catch up with him. However, for all the lost possession, there's no one else drving forward and likely to set a chance up. Our main problem is a lack of height and bodies getting into the box as we are getting crosses in. We need more runs like from Shelvey for his goal against Udinese. Therefore, I would consider playing Shelvey with Gerrard on the right instead of Suso and see how that goes.
Gerrard is always looking to be the hero so he will do whatever he can make sure that happens. He neglected Suso on the wing and opted for a long cross on few occassion. He got worse as time wore on crossing from deep at the slightest oppurtunity; playing to Stokes strenght. He needs to be responsible with the ball.

He's been carrying you lot around for years now ,no wonder he's facked,he can't do it forever ..........
As Austin Powers once said 'thats not my bag baby'
Gerrard is not a tiki taka player.
A wheel out of kilter, if you will.
Brendan is an idealist running our team on limited resources and trying to make player who play one way play another. Something has to give.
Anyone notice how the younger players all seem to be able to adapt? Old dog, new tricks etc.
The young players have been playing this way for years thanks to segura and borrell

I agree with this. But at the same time I miss the surging heart on sleeve football we produced under Rafa on our way to Istanbul.
Incidentally those new dogs? Guess who brought most of them in ?
I would take Rafa back in a heartbeat.
"I have wrote on here many times.......", Bungee9? Who are you? Ernie Wise?
He wasn't good today, he was trying to force it too much at times knowing we needed a win. I thought he had begun to buy in to BR style by focusing on retaining possession there were opportunities in the Norwich and united games when a long difficult pass was on but instead he just rolled it short to someone and the team retained possession.
Today he lapsed into his old self again looking to play the killer ball but it's understandable, that's his game and he carried the club for years playing like that
Ignore TOOR.
He seems to be convinced that all players who try to attack should lose the ball 30+ times a game.
No, I think that players who penetrate will lose the ball more than players who pass it backwards and sideways most of the time. I said this at the beginning of the season and voiced my concerns that we'd struggle to score goals because we have too few players who are penetrative players. You laughed at this, now you look stupid, again.
