I have said before that 5th, even 6th at a push would be fine by me....as long as we are very close to the top 4 and not 10pts behind it.
Jol's 5th in 2005/06, not Jol's 5th in 2006/07
It is pretty much where I'd expect us to be with Redknapp this season with this squad, so as long as we achieve that I will admit he has proved me wrong.
"I don't think it's unrealistic to expect us to be at least near to 4th this season."
The squad is ok.
The real test of AVB (assuming the bedding down period is gone) is how :
- his teams perform against the top 4 rivals (which Spurs need to improve)
- he handles the PL final third (which has been poor for the past 2 seasons)
- he manages squad utilisation to get the best out of all players as much as possible over longish Cup campaigns, and when the usual Spurs injury plagues come
The first irrefutable answers will be known by Dec 1.
If we have been spoilt for getting fourth there can't be any argument really - unless AVB improves on it, or at least gets very close to it, it was wrong to get rid of Harry for AVB for football reasons
-------------
I would agree with that, and our squad relative to Arsenal has probably got stronger.. let's see what happens
I still don't get why it hangs completely on his neck though - what if Levy refuses to sign another striker and Defoe get's injured during ACoN?
As I said before we could finish 5th with him doing a great job.
Plenty of what ifs.
Said it before, the mark of a great manager is when things are not going as wished re injuries, incoming personnel.
Levy will have Saha (or equivalent) here on Feb 1.
Redknapp's mid-to-late season form was awful. A lot of us have attributed it to his preference for picking the same players week-in week-out.
We had that spell in 09/10 between Feb (Villa 0-0?) and April (Pompey semi) where we nearly chucked it away until he stumbled across Hudd and Modric for the big games.
We had a similarly awful spell in 10/11 and left it too late to recover.
Last season we all know about only too well.
Going by what I have seen so far the core members of the first team are being used more rather than less, and probably will be for the last 4 Europa games and the later rounds of the Carling cup if we progress.
I have said before that 5th, even 6th at a push would be fine by me....as long as we are very close to the top 4 and not 10pts behind it.
-----
Sorry HRH I missed that one and yes I'd agree again - primarily you want to see the players give 100% and achieve the results they deserve. This squad is more than capable of fighting for 4th but there are a lot more factors than the manager that will decide it.

One of my worries about AVB was actually the comments he made about being happy with just two senior strikers in Defoe and Ade (and Kane at the time, now Dempsey).
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/19356586
I think we are very light as it is, and need another lone-striker in addition to Defoe and Dempsey, let alone when Adebayor goes to the ACON
"The first irrefutable answers will be known by Dec 1."
Why wait? Chicken can tell you right now
Yeah HRH I remember that and I was convinced it was just him not telling the world we were after a striker. I like the idea of Dempsey up front but then that leaves us light in the middle..
NEW STRIKER?!
Bãle's
If you're not happy with me being positive about AVB I don't know how you can handle such unbridled optimism
========================
Again, this is the point. I have no problem with your pro-views. I respect that you have a view - that is not the problem. My problem (or issue) is that you seem to think that unless we share your view, then we must be wrong.
You are entitled to think he is the new Mourinho, Fergie, Wenger or whoever - that is your call. However, seeing that you're already making excuses about having a weaker squad etc. to me it seems you dont have as much confidence in him, as much as you say you do.
This isn't an AVB v Harry comparison, but i would have been confident of finishing 4th with this squad under Harry - the fact you're not confident under AVB tells its own story. And its kind of covering your back either way, as if/when we do not get 4th, you'll claim that you didnt expect to - and if he does you'll claim he was the right man for the job.
Football is about progression, so if we dont gain (or match) last season - we have failed. And whilst AVB is the manager, from a fan's point of view - the buck stops with him.
"Why wait? Chicken can tell you right now"
Not if it distracts him from telling me what his day job is.
Hopefully after half a season working with Defoe he will realise that we will definitely need another CF even when Adebayor is here
Defoe is not a #1 striker.
However, if the pair of them could get 35 PL goals between them, that would be superb.
I find AVB quite refreshing, in that some of the lines he throws to the media (e.g. he congratulated the players after the last EL game) appear to be for the benefit of the club and team, rather than simply himself. It's one of the things that have made me warm to him.

HRH - do you know Chicken in real life? Genuine question.
"Again, this is the point. I have no problem with your pro-views. I respect that you have a view - that is not the problem. My problem (or issue) is that you seem to think that unless we share your view, then we must be wrong."
If I disagree with you then it will come across that I think you're wrong, yes.
"You are entitled to think he is the new Mourinho, Fergie, Wenger or whoever - that is your call. However, seeing that you're already making excuses about having a weaker squad etc. to me it seems you dont have as much confidence in him, as much as you say you do."
I wasn't making excuses, I was explaining why I think that expecting 3rd place is unrealistic. HRH seems to have grasped it - i'm not saying we should hope to improve but this idea of "3rd or failure" is incredibly blinkered.
My confidence is AV metred by the reality, as referred to in my comments about the squad.
"..i would have been confident of finishing 4th with this squad under Harry - the fact you're not confident under AVB tells its own story...."
Please explain how your level of expectation has any baring on mine because you lost me there.
Harry would have struggled to rebuild a side bereft of King, Modric, VDV, Parker, BAE... IMO.
"Football is about progression, so if we dont gain (or match) last season - we have failed. And whilst AVB is the manager, from a fan's point of view - the buck stops with him."
Whilst I would agree that is the likely outcome who the fans chose to blame is not necessarily the cause of said failure. There will always be scapegoats in football, a foreign manager with a dodgy record at Chelsea is an obvious target. Again, not an excuse just an observation.
How dare you use the Darth moniker.
There is Darth Levy, and his apprentice Darth RDBD.
Only 2 Superior Spurs Sith there are. No more, no less.
"I thought you told him what you do when he asked?"
Correct.
"Harry would have struggled to rebuild a side bereft of King, Modric, VDV"
Make no mistake here, Arry would have had 3 players in mind to replace all of them.

RDBD, sorry have you been asking for my occupation? I genuinely haven't seen it.
I kind of do audit work for the FSA, although its disbanding in about March/April next year - so not sure what processes i'll be undertaking after that, or for what HQ.

I didnt agree on Huds being loaned out either, but certainly on the other big(ish) debate re: Brad/Lloris, we have commented from opposite sides of the fence.
But i must know you because we're both unsure that AVB is the right man for the job.
