General elections were held in Malawi on 17 May 1994 to elect the President and National Assembly. They were the first multi-party elections in the country since prior to independence in 1964, and the first since the restoration of multi-party democracy the previous year. The Malawi Congress Party (MCP), which had governed the country since independence (from 1966 to 1993 as the sole legal party), was decisively beaten by the United Democratic Front (UDF). Former President-for-life Hastings Banda, in power since independence, was defeated in by the UDF's Bakili Muluzi, who took 47 percent of the vote to Banda's 33 percent.
At a reputed age of 96, Banda would have been the oldest elected president in world history had he won. He was one of the oldest persons running for that office in history.
Spain have been stripped of their 2023 Rugby World Cup place after World Rugby deemed they used an ineligible player during qualification.
The side confirmed a World Cup spot for the first time in 24 years in March but will now be replaced in Pool B by Romania.
It is the second successive World Cup at which Spain have lost their place, for the same offence.
They still have 14 days in which to appeal the decision.
A 10-point penalty applied to Spain in the European qualification tournament means Portugal are now also in a position to reach the World Cup.
While Romania advance automatically in place of Spain, Portugal can now secure their place through a final qualification tournament in November.
Romania last played at the World Cup in 2015, while Portugal's only appearance at the tournament came in 2007.
West Ham captain Mark Noble says winning the Europa League would not tempt him playing longer for his boyhood club.
The Hammers face Eintracht Frankfurt in the semi-final of the Europa League on Thursday.
But 34-year-old Noble announced in March 2021 he would retire when his contract runs out this season.
"Winning the Europa League, would I come back? No - that's my honest answer," said Noble.
"To end on that would be pretty special."
In 2020 he was rated as the player with the second highest conversion rate for penalty kicks in the world over the last 20 years. His 90.5% conversion rate was only beaten by Robert Lewandowski's rate of 91.1%.

Michael Stanley Dukakis (born November 3, 1933) is an American retired lawyer and politician who served as Governor of Massachusetts from 1975 to 1979 and again from 1983 to 1991. He is the longest-serving governor in Massachusetts history and only the second Greek-American governor in U.S. history, after Spiro Agnew. He was nominated by the Democratic Party for president in the 1988 election, losing to the Republican nominee, Vice President George H. W. Bush.
With the death of nonagenarian Bob Dole on December 5, 2021, Dukakis is the oldest living losing major party presidential candidate (outside of incumbents).

A 39-year-old woman has died after reportedly immersing herself into a river as part of a cold water therapy session.
The woman, who was from Manchester, died after paramedics were called to attend a riverside in Derbyshire on Monday afternoon.
The session was run by Kevin O'Neill of Breatheolution, whose previous clients include Coleen Rooney and actor Stephen Graham.
The BBC has asked the firm to comment.
Mr O'Neill told The Sun: "I am heartbroken. I've not slept and I'm finding it hard to process. I cannot stop thinking about her family. It's tragic."
An inquest is expected to be opened into the woman's death.
British comedian and actor turned US talk show host James Corden has announced he will be leaving The Late Late Show next year.
He made the announcement during a tape recording of the CBS network show in Los Angeles, California on Thursday.
Corden - best known in the UK for TV series Gavin and Stacey - has hosted the US-based talk show since 2015.
In a previous interview with Variety, he said he did not see his stint on the show as "a final destination".
Corden took over the role of hosting the late-night talk show from comedian and actor Craig Ferguson eight years ago.
He has become a household name in the US, presenting notable showbiz awards such as the Tony and Grammy awards.
During his time on The Late Late Show, he introduced signature segments such as 'Drop the Mic' and 'Carpool Karaoke' - which featured celebrities including singer Adele and Prince Harry. The segments went onto have their own standalone series.
In a statement, George Cheeks, the president and CEO of the CBS network said: "Seven years ago, James Corden came to the US and took television by storm, with huge creative and comedic swings that resonated in a big way with viewers on-air and online.
"From 'Crosswalk the Musical' to the legendary 'Carpool Karaoke,' and every unique comedy segment he introduced, James has truly reimagined many elements of the late night format."
They added: "We wish he could stay longer, but we are very proud he made CBS his American home and that this partnership will extend one more season on The Late Late Show."

"Fight for This Love" is the debut solo single by English singer and Girls Aloud member Cheryl Cole, recorded for her debut studio album, 3 Words (2009). It was released in the United Kingdom and Ireland as the lead single on 2009 by Fascination Records (Polydor Records) and in 2010 in some European countries as the album's second single through Universal Music. It was written and produced by Wayne Wilkins and Steve Kipner with an additional writing from Andre Merrit. The up-tempo pop, dance-pop and R&B song revolves around a lyrical content of not giving up on the partner.
Following her first performance of the song on The X Factor it topped charts in Ireland and the United Kingdom. In May 2010 it was certified platinum by the British Phonographic Industry for shipments topping 600,000 units. In December 2012 "Fight for This Love" became the 125th single to reach the million mark in UK Chart history, and the third to reach the feat in 2012, along with Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" and Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know". "Fight for This Love" also achieved success in Europe by topping charts in Norway, Hungary and Denmark. "Fight for This Love" received a BRIT Award nomination in the Best British Single category.
People hate artists for trying to be as successful as possible in their job and trying to get as much compensation as possible for doing it. But every single one of us does that in our own jobs.
A roaring second-half performance saw Sheffield United come from behind to beat Queens Park Rangers and ensure their bid for a Championship play-off place will remain in their hands going into the final day.
In Mark Warburton's last home game as R's boss, his side led after a low-key first half through Charlie Austin's header from Albert Adomah's cross from deep.
However, the sixth-placed Blades came out re-energised after the break, going close on several occasions before Iliman Ndiaye eventually levelled from close-range following some pinball action in the QPR box.
The visitors continued to dominate and deservedly led when former R's defender Jack Robinson powered home a header from a clever free-kick routine, with substitute Conor Hourihane volleying in a third in stoppage time.
