Argentines are choosing a new president in an election rocked by the emergence as front-runner of anti-establishment populist and self-styled "libertarian" Javier Milei.

Mr Milei is an outspoken right-wing economist whose "shock-jock" style and aggressive social media campaigning have appealed to younger voters.

His victory in the primary has put his two main rivals on the defensive.

The election comes amid a severe economic crisis.

Latin America's third-largest economy is suffering from triple-digit inflation and a devalued currency that has left 40% living below the poverty line.

Argentina remains the world's single biggest debtor to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), owing $46bn (£38bn).

Traditionally, elections here have been dominated by the left-wing Peronist movement - whose candidate is the current economy minister Sergio Massa - and its centre-right opposition, which has chosen former security minister, Patricia Bullrich.

The government is considering extending its mortgage guarantee scheme as part of measures to help first-time buyers in the upcoming Autumn Statement.

It is understood the Treasury is looking at making the scheme, which helps people take out a mortgage with a 5% deposit, available for another year.

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt will announce the Autumn Statement on 22 November, weeks after the Tories lost two by-elections to Labour.

The Treasury declined to comment.

The scheme, first introduced in March 2021 by the then Chancellor Rishi Sunak, was designed to encourage lenders to give mortgages to borrowers with a smaller deposit.

Since December that year, the interest rate has risen from a historic low to the current 5.25% as the Bank of England has sought to curb high inflation.

It has meant that mortgages have become more expensive for borrowers while many grapple with the higher cost of living.

Recent figures from financial information service Moneyfacts show that the typical rate for a five-year fixed mortgage have dipped to 5.99%. But a two-year fixed mortgage has a rate of 6.5%.

The mortgage guarantee scheme was extended for 12 months last year and is due to end in December.

However, it is understood the Treasury is considering keeping it in place for another year.

The world's oldest dog ever has died at the age of 31 years and 165 days.

Guinness World Record holder Bobi, a purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo, passed away at his home in Portugal on Saturday.

His death was announced on social media by a veterinarian who met Bobi several times.

"Despite outliving every dog in history, his 11,478 days on earth would never be enough, for those who loved him," wrote Dr Karen Becker.

Bobi became both the world's oldest living dog and the oldest dog ever in February - beating an almost century-old record for the latter title.

The previous oldest dog ever was Australia's Bluey, who died in 1939 at the age of 29 years and five months.

Bobi's grand old age was validated by the Portuguese government's pet database, which is managed by the National Union of Veterinarians.

Bobi lived his whole life with the Costa family in the village of Conqueiros, near Portugal's west coast, after being born with three siblings in an outbuilding.

Leonel Costa, who was eight years old at the time, said his parents had too many animals and had to put the puppies down, but Bobi escaped.

Mr Costa and his brothers kept the dog's existence a secret from their parents until he was eventually discovered and became part of the family, who fed him the same food they eat.

Apart from a scare in 2018 when he was hospitalised after suddenly collapsing due to breathing difficulty, Mr Costa said in February that Bobi had enjoyed a relatively trouble-free life and thought the secret to his longevity was the "calm, peaceful environment" he lived in.

However, he had experienced trouble walking and worsening eyesight prior to his death.

Bobi was not the only dog owned by the Mr Costa to live a long life. Bobi's mother lived to the age of 18 while another of the family's dogs died at the age of 22.

Alexis Sanchez scored his first goal since returning to Inter Milan as his side edged past Red Bull Salzburg in Group D in the Champions League.

The 34-year-old, who re-joined Inter on a 12-month deal this summer, opened the scoring in the 19th minute with a cool side-footed finish.

Oscar Gloukh levelled for the visitors in the second half.

Hakan Calhanoglu sealed Inter's win from the spot after Lucas Gourna-Douath fouled Davide Frattesi in the area.

The hosts finished strongly and could have had a third only for Lautaro Martinez to have an 81st-minute strike ruled out for an earlier offside.

Sanchez's opener for Inter took him to 16 goals in the Champions League, and sees him overtake Arturo Vidal (15) to become the top scoring Chilean in the competition.

Inter are top of Group D on seven points from three matches, while RB Salzburg are third on three points.

A runaway tortoise that went missing more than three years ago has been found and reunited with her owner.

The African Sulcata tortoise, native to the southern part of the Sahara desert, was spotted plodding around the town of Interlachen in Florida.

She was seen trying to cross a state road - equivalent to a dual carriageway.

The officers described the tortoise as "unusual" and were initially unaware of its sex.

Florida's Wildest Animal Refuge took her into their care, and launched an appeal to find her rightful owner.

Authorities were sure she belonged to someone as she "liked people and head pats".

When someone did claim the tortoise, they told the police department she had gone missing since June 2020.

Everton chairman Bill Kenwright, an acclaimed West End theatre and film producer, has died at the age of 78.

Kenwright had surgery to remove a cancerous tumour from his liver eight weeks ago.

He had been on the board at Everton since 1989, taking over as chairman at Goodison Park in 2004.

The Liverpudlian was also one of the UK's most successful theatre producers and played Gordon Clegg in Coronation Street between 1968 and 2012.

Kenwright was awarded a CBE for his services to film and theatre in the 2001 New Years Honours List.

Everton said it was "in mourning" following the death of the club's longest-serving chairman for more than a century.

"The club has lost a chairman, a leader, a friend, and an inspiration," Everton added.

On 12 October, the Premier League club said Kenwright had a cancerous tumour removed from his liver six weeks before.

Everton said the operation was "completely successful", but complications meant Kenwright required a "prolonged period in an intensive care unit".

Announcing his death on Tuesday, Kenwright's family said he "passed away peacefully" on Monday night "surrounded by his family and loved ones".

"Bill was driven by his passions and devoted his life to them; his deep love of theatre, film, music and his beloved Everton, and the families they created," a family statement read.

"He impacted the lives of thousands, whether that be through the launching of careers or his unending loyalty, generosity and unfaltering friendship and support."

In a multiple award-winning career spanning six decades, Kenwright produced more than 500 West End, Broadway, UK touring and international theatre productions, films and music albums.

"We will remember him with huge love and admiration - the shows will of course go on, as he would have wished, and his towering legacy will continue," his family added.

Solly March and Danny Welbeck will be sidelined for "a long time", says Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi.

Winger March, 29, left the field on a stretcher during Saturday's defeat against Manchester City after appearing to bend his knee awkwardly.

"Unfortunately it's a very tough injury - football is like this and injury can happen," said De Zerbi, who did not specify what the problem was.

Forward Welbeck, 32, was replaced early in the game because of a muscle injury.

The duo join Julio Enciso, Jakub Moder, Pervis Estupinan and Tariq Lamptey as the latest long-term casualties for the Seagulls.

"Unfortunately, it's a very tough injury [for March]. We lose him for a long time and Danny Welbeck the same," said De Zerbi as he looked ahead to Thursday's Europa League game against Ajax.

"It's not my job to inform you about the injury, I know we've lost an important player for a long time but I don't want to cry because sometimes managers do when they lose players."

March has had a long lay-off before, suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury in 2015 that saw him miss the second half of the 2015-16 season.

Glenn Maxwell hit the fastest men's World Cup century in 40 balls as Australia inflicted a record tournament defeat on the Netherlands in Delhi.

The right-hander beat Aiden Markram's record of 49 balls, set 18 days ago for South Africa against Sri Lanka.

The Netherlands were bowled out for 90 in response, to suffer a 309-run loss.

David Warner also made his second century of the tournament as Australia racked up 399-8, with Bas de Leede conceding an ODI record 115.

Maxwell's innings was full of power and extraordinary strokeplay, and is the fourth fastest in ODI history and Australia's quickest, beating his 51-ball ton against Sri Lanka in the 2015 World Cup.

South Africa's AB de Villiers' 31-ball century is the fastest, coming against West Indies in 2015.

The margin of defeat beats Afghanistan's 275-run defeat by Australia in the 2015 World Cup, while it is also Australia's biggest ODI win.

Australia have now won three consecutive games, after starting with three defeats, and are starting to consolidate their place in the top four, with this huge victory boosting their net run-rate.

The Netherlands' only win came against South Africa last Tuesday, and they are now bottom of the 10-team table.

Mustapha Bundu marked his first Plymouth Argyle start with a goal as the Pilgrims brushed aside Sheffield Wednesday to heap more misery on the Championship's bottom club.

Morgan Whittaker clipped the post early on for Argyle but Wednesday dominated much of the first period until Sierra Leone's Bundu blasted a free-kick off the underside of the bar and into the top corner.

Pol Valentin gifted Argyle a second shortly after as he lost the ball to Whittaker and the Argyle dangerman raced through to steer a left-footed effort around Cameron Dawson.

Ryan Hardie completed the win with a low right-footed finish in the second half after Finn Azaz had dispossessed George Byers and played the Scottish striker in.

Joey Barton has been sacked as Bristol Rovers manager after almost three years in charge of the League One side.

Rovers are 16th in the table having won one of their past five matches and recorded four league wins all season.

The 41-year-old former Manchester City, Newcastle and England midfielder led the club to promotion on the final day of his first full season in charge.

First-team coach Andy Mangan will lead the side in the interim while the club look for a new manager.

Fellow coaches Glenn Whelan, Danny Ventre and Anssi Jaakkola will support Mangan, with their first game in charge at home to Northampton on Saturday.

Rovers are the fifth League One side to change manager this season after Charlton Athletic, Fleetwood Town, Cheltenham Town and Lincoln City.

Barton moved to the Memorial Stadium in February 2021 having previously had a spell in charge of Fleetwood Town.

He signed a three-year contract extension with the club until 2026 in July last year following promotion back to the third tier and they went on to finish 17th in the table last season.

They have only won four of 13 league matches this campaign, with five losses and four draws, and drew 1-1 with Stevenage on Tuesday in what would be Barton's final game at the helm.

"Everyone at the club would like to thank Joey for all his efforts and wish him well in the future," a club statement said.
