Campaigners have renewed calls for developers to abandon plans to build properties on a piece of land in Wincobank, arguing the site is "steeped in history".
Residents said work had been carried out on the land earlier this month, with trees and shrubs cleared, despite no formal plans being approved.
The Friends of Wincobank Hill have fought to preserve the stretch of land off Sandstone Drive, which they believe lies on top of a Roman dyke, for more than 20 years.
The BBC has approached landowner Investates Developers for a comment.
The land lies to the north east of semi-detached houses on Sandstone Road.
Investates Developers had previously made planning applications to build houses on the site dating back to 1991.
Further applications were made in 1995, 2003, 2012 and 2018 but each application was rejected by Sheffield City Council's planning committee.
In a report from 2018, the council rejected the proposal on the grounds that "the proposed development may result in damage to a significant prehistoric archaeological site".
The developer appealed against the decision but this was dismissed by a government planning inspector.
In his appeal decision, inspector Colin Ball said the Roman Ridge "may be one of the most significant examples of ancient linear land division in Britain".

Harland & Wolff, the Belfast shipyard best known for the Titanic, has been saved by a deal with Spain's state-owned shipbuilder.
Navantia had been in exclusive negotiations since October after Harland & Wolff's holding company fell into administration.
About 1,000 jobs are to be saved in the deal, which also includes Harland & Wolff's facilities in Scotland and England.
The UK Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said the deal was "good for jobs" and "good for national security".
posted 4 days, 8 hours ago
Reynolds said that the deal secures all four Harland & Wolff yards across the UK and guarantees jobs for "years not months in all four of those yards".
He added that the deal was "a major vote of confidence in the UK from Navantia".
Asked whether the government had sweetened the deal for Navantia by changing the terms of a contract to deliver three Royal Navy support ships, Reynolds said there had been a "minor revision" to the contract to include "more support" from the government.
The deal is to be presented as early fruits of the government's post Brexit "reset".
Gavin Robinson, the leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), said he was "delighted that this agreement has been reached which will secure the future of jobs in Belfast and in its other sites".
The MP for East Belfast said that uncertainty over the future of the business had been "hugely unsettling... particularly for all the staff at the yard".
Robinson added that Harland & Wolff "forms part of a wider defence sector that has huge potential for further growth in Northern Ireland".

An inquest into the death of broadcaster Dr Michael Mosley has not been able to determine a cause, with the coroner instead recording an open conclusion.
The 67-year-old science journalist went missing in June after going for a walk on the Greek island of Symi.
His disappearance sparked a high-profile search effort by emergency services and his body was found after four days.
In written findings, senior coroner for Buckinghamshire Crispin Butler said the cause of Dr Mosley's death was "indeterminate" and "unascertainable" - and "was most likely attributable either to heatstroke (accidental) or non-identified pathological cause".
Mr Butler said Dr Mosley's death was not found to be as a result of homicide, suicide, or an accident related to injuries.
An open conclusion by a coroner means there is insufficient evidence to decide how a death came about - the case is left open in case further evidence comes to light.
Dr Mosley, a broadcaster for almost 20 years, known for programmes that focused on diet, exercise and medicine, had been staying with family and friends when they travelled to Pedi Beach on the morning of 5 June, a findings document said.

The goal was the first conceded by Rovers in six games and ended a run of six successive wins for John Eustace's promotion hopefuls.
They remain in fifth place, in the play-off positions, while Millwall climbed into 10th with their first win in seven matches.

Fleetwood Town have sacked manager Charlie Adam after just under a year in the job following a run of one win in their past 11 league games.
The Cod Army lost 2-0 at Barrow on Saturday, their fifth defeat in a run which also includes five draws.
In addition, they were knocked out of the FA Cup in the first round at Reading last month.
Former Liverpool midfielder Adam took charge on New Year's Eve 2023, replacing Lee Johnson, in his first job as a manager.
The 39-year-old failed to prevent the Lancashire club being relegated to League Two at the end of last season and they are currently 18th in the table, eight points above the relegation zone.
Fleetwood owner Jamie Pilley said: "I'd like to personally thank Charlie for his commitment and professionalism over the last 12 months.
"He's been a pleasure to work with but recent results meant we felt a change was necessary. I wish him well for the future."
Fleetwood's next match is against Chesterfield at home on Boxing Day.

Tributes have been paid to a nine-year-old boy who was killed in an attack on a German Christmas market.
André Gleissner died after a car drove into a crowd of shoppers at the market in Magdeburg on Friday evening, a local fire department said.
A social media post, reportedly attributed to André's mother, called him "my little teddy bear" and said he would "always live in our hearts".
Four women, aged 45, 52, 67 and 75, also died in the attack. Authorities are holding a suspect in pre-trial detention on counts of murder, attempted murder and dangerous bodily harm.
Another tribute came from a fire department in nearby Schöppenstedt.
In a statement it said André was a member of the children's fire brigade in Warle, which is about an hour's drive from Magdeburg.
The children's fire brigade is a youth organisation open to kids aged six to 12 with an interest in firefighting.
"Our thoughts are with André's relatives, who we also want to support during this difficult time," the statement said.
The Lower Saxony youth fire brigade also paid tribute to the nine-year-old.
"Our condolences go out to his family, his friends and everyone who was close to him," it said in a statement.
"We stand by their side in these difficult times and express our deepest sympathy," it added.

Liverpool went four points clear at the top of the Premier League as they handed out a merciless thrashing to Tottenham Hotspur in front of their own fans.
Arne Slot's pacesetters were simply irresistible as every frailty in an injury-hit Spurs team was ruthlessly exposed.
Liverpool had already had several opportunities before Luis Diaz headed in Trent Alexander-Arnold's perfect cross after 23 minutes, Alexis Mac Allister doubling their lead with another header 13 minutes later.
James Maddison gave Spurs hope of an unlikely comeback when he curled in his eighth goal of the season four minutes before half-time but that was snuffed out in first-half stoppage time when Mohamed Salah set up Dominik Szoboszlai for a simple finish.
Spurs, with a lengthy list of absentees and fielding an unchanged team having played a Carabao Cup quarter-final against Manchester United on Thursday, looked leg-weary, leaving them wide open to further punishment from this smooth Liverpool machine.
Salah drew level with Billy Liddell's record of 228 Liverpool goals when he extended Liverpool's advantage from close range after 54 minutes, then went into fourth place in the club's all-time list of scorers on his own when Szoboszlai repaid the first-half compliment to play the Egyptian in for his second.
Dejan Kulusevski scored for the fifth successive game with 18 minutes left, while another from Dominic Solanke threatened to give the scoreline an unrealistic appearance until Diaz swooped for his second and Liverpool's sixth.
