For me the best player ever was Maradonna. I've only seen clips of Pele and to me he was a goal scorer whereas Maradonna had everything at every club and all this while coked out his mind

I've always said without hesitation that Maradona was the best ever.

But Messi is catching him.

At least!

"you said If you are surrounded by substandard players theres not much you can do about it

and maradona had average players around him and yet won many trophies with napoli and also with his country"

---------------------------------

Thats not the point. The point is that discounting a players ability because the country they represent hasn't won anything doesn't really make sense.

And I think you under estimate the strength of those teams. They weren't one man teams by any stretch. They were both great teams, present day argentina isn't.

Messi is the greatest footballer the world has seen.

The World Cup argument us pathetic. By that reasoning George Best was just another half decent player

Argentina never had average players, they had a good team and Maradona, but i think Messi is up there with him now and will keep it up.

Champagne

I think you'll find we've already said the same about the WC and the comments were tongue in cheek.

I also agree that Messi is the best - certainly the best that I have ever seen play in the flesh

And I doubt that Maradonna wis chinged out his napper in his heyday

Saying that, going forward Argentina should be unbelievable now.

Messi, Aguero, Tevez, Di Maria, Higuain.

I don't know much about their defenders, though.

Some players will never make the latter stages of the WC due to their country - Dalglish whereas other will single handedly drag their country to victory - Maradonna
---------------------------------

Think before I type? Did you even watch Mexico 86? That Argentine team was excellent and whilst Diego was the shining star, he didn't do anything single handedly. Thats a bit of a slur to the talents of Burruchaga and Valdano.

You don't beat a West German side featuring the likes of Rumenigge and Matthaus "single-handedly".

Think before YOU type...

Kagawa you should know better than any - who cares how many you concede when your forward line can score more

All those strikers and yet Wigan's Franco Di Santo was called up for a recent squad.

Pele scored in a World Cup at 17...

Pele scored over 1000 goals...

Pele could dribble, header and was an all round athlete.

As great as the wee man is and, he is...there's Pele and everything below.

Messi is lucky that, the team he plays for are miles in front of the rest.

Now, we can either say it's because Barca are so good or, that Madrid, ManU, Munich, AC Milan et al; are shadows of the teams they once were.

I know which I would choose

the team(brazil) pele played in were miles above everyone else and a lot of the goals he scored were also in the army team

A bluenose said to me that Barcelona aren't the team they used to be and it's quite easy to keep Messi out of the game--- bitter or what.

I never saw Pele play apart from the famous clips that get rolled out when the WC is on but I'd argue that it was easier to score against defenders in 1950/60s Brazil than in 21st Century La Liga.

Not taking anything away from the achievements of the great man but I would still put Messi higher due to the more demanding nature of today's game.

On the other hand, would Messi even be able to kick one of those old balls more than 10 yards?!

They were up against Great teams...England's best.

What army team???

Fair point, Gary. Their attack really is immense.

TCD

The Barcelona team that beat us 2-0 in 2009 certainly didn't play a 'shadow' of a United side. We had, by quite a distance, the best defence in the game. Messi was unbelievable that day, and without him, Barcelona are a shadow of the team they are when with him.

As for Pele, I'm quite young so can't comment on him but the talk usually is, is that he's more of a self hype machine that has almost appointed himself as the best ever player. I've read, albeit only on forums, that many people don't even consider him to be the best player to even come from Brazil. To be fair, I can't really comment either way.

pele scored 643 official goals in his club career

over 500 of them came in 'friendlies' including games in the army

Look at the footage of the 1970 WC Final and you couldn't choose a stand-out performer. Even right back Carlos Alberto could bust the net! Great, great team.

Ronaldo is so good he has played in World Cup, Euro and Copa America finals

Compared to when Keane played?

Or Bryan Robson, Cantona?

Barcelona are special...the rest are way, way behind.

But put them up against the Milan team of Baresi, Maldini, Costacurta, Van Basten, Guillit and Rijkaard.

Only one winner for me

Messi, in 8 attempts, hasn't netted against Chelsea.

When Barcelona are up against a compact defence, they struggle(sometimes)

Celtic for instance

'Fat' Ronaldo was simply frightening at his peak. Pace, power, skill, flair. Incredible player. Also the pioneer of the most ridiculous haircut ever!
