Sad news
Had a great commentary voice as well as being a fine player.
i think unfortunately he may be remembered for all the wrong reasons - the Kerry Packer episode which didn't exactly raise him up in the eyes of many, his often-cited remark about making the west indies 'grovel' and his record as test captain, which wasn't great. Better in the commentary box i guess and a very distinctive voice. I must admit i didn't know he was unwell...!
grown up hearing his commentary. Its a big loss.
Very sad news. RIP Tony Greig.
Agree with you guys. Big loss to cricket
Goodnight Charlie, RIP Tony Greig

Good night Charlie, on your way son.
Sad loss, good commentator. RIP Greigy.
It was only some weeks ago Grieg was interviewed from his own back yard, full of confidence re; his operation on the following Monday and stipulating his return to the commentary box for the Boxing Day test....unfortunately it was one battle in which Griegy lost....every other battle re; cricket he always came out the other side albeit a few scratches but survived to tell the tale....I will miss the jibes he had in the box with Chappelli and Lawry and co. We can expect nearly every highlight reel will be backed up by a Tony Grieg comment..."yes he has got him" he's gone....
Well said Rabbitohs I remember watching that interview thinking he'll win the battle. He looked confident, eager to return, thinking this is Tony Greig he ain't backing down... but that's life for you. RIP, sir.
The Sydney public will turn up in force on the 03/01/13 with their Tony Greig hats on whilst I'm sure the Sydney cricket trust will put on a tribute as well...Greig will be a long time remembered...
RIP Greigy, met him twice a giant of a man and a Cricket tragic.Sleep well Tony.
sad to hear of this. Seemed a nice guy. rip
OK, I'll add a dissenting voice. I lived through the Grieg era and was surprised to read he had such good all round figures. And let's not foget this was the beginning of the West Indies dominance and Lillee/Thomson pretty much at their peak.
I guess I am surprised as I remember him as a mercenary who made Kerry Packer (and a number of elite cricketers) very wealthy with his covert activities.
jesus, Christopher Martin-Jenkins has died as well
yes elephant think i mentioned that - probably Grieg will be remembered for all the wrong reasons. But its worth noting that a lot of cricketers who would not have been earning very much today probably owe him a lot - certainly Packer was responsible (in an entirely unintentional way) in bringing to the fore earnings for international cricketers. And, of course, it was one of the things which finally brought about central contracts (as was the rebel SA tour)
Greigy did get looked after financially by Packer, but it must be said.....he did risk a lot by jumping over with Packer.....if the gamble taken was not a success Greig would of been left out to dry after severing his ties with the English cricket board....
Underated as a cricketer as Botham followed him, but averaged 40 with the bat and scored runs in India, West Indies and against Lillee and Thomson. Useful bowler at medium fast and won a test bowling off spin in West Indies. Caught brilliantly at slip as well.
Very sad to hear. Been watching him doing interviews and commentating for over 25 years.
There wasn't a dry eye in the house of the Sydney Cricket Ground today when Tony Greig was paid tribute for his services to the game....his wife and family held it together very well under the circumstances..
