Net spend

5 years probably includes a lot of players who have now left. I would imagine that the likes of Downing left on a profit, but Carlos Cuellar and Curtis Davis were very expensive mistakes.

And as far as comparing transfer spend goes, not sure if anyone else saw the article on the BBC (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/20793698). Their refusal to look at net spend properly puts us 3rd in the list. Now apart from the year Harry took over and bought back JD, Notso and Palacios, I would guess that we have at the very least broken even.

We do well for a club that:

A) Has the 6th biggest revenue (or sugar daddy) to spend behind United, City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool and

B) Has the 6th biggest wage bill behind the same five clubs.

Our transfer strategy and wage budget isn't always popular among many but there really is little we could do differently that wouldn't get us bang in trouble financially and needing a rescue.

Usually people moaning about the lack of money spent don't look at the big picture - getting the right balance between neglecting the squad and faltering or overstretching yourselves and being beholden to a huge wage bill with players you cant get rid of is a delicate process.

We have it about right - buy youngsters in bulk and loan them out, buy mid-to-high priced players in their early to mid 20s who haven't reached peak and the occasional older head. It's the only way for us at present and has on the whole has served us well over the last 8/9yrs since Arnesen arrived.

Mistakes have been made but considering we have never had a good specialist in the DoF role for any period of time we have done well

We're lucky to have a good club owner like Levy, we've got some great players this season but we haven't spent ridiculous money on them.

On another note, would you believe I saw someone attempting to abuse Cuducini on twitter? "You've just rinsed us for wages you showed be ashamed" this idiot didn't realise you need 3 keepers in a 25 man squad, we were lucky to have 3 decent keeps in Carlo, Gomes and Friedel and now we have some how managed to bag Lloris who could of gone to any club in the world imo. Now Carlo has gone, will we be keeping hold of Gomes?

A lot of waste (gross spend etc) on players from the beginning to 2006-7 to be fair.

The last 3 yrs has been where Levy really has been purging the deadwood and making the difference on the balance sheet.

It has been a learning process for him, but he has more or less got things optimal now without the CL piggie trough, bigger stadium, or monies from on-pitch success.
