Pride Park - The home of hoofball.

Spotty,
Derby were definitely off colour last Saturday. It's the worst we have played at home this season. Otherwise we would have won without a problem. There was a period in the second half when we hoofed it a few times. But so did you, you also played hoofball - I've just re-watched the Football League Show to confirm. And have you seen your goal? Cohen missed the ball completely - he was so lucky It bounced just right even for his clumsy lunge - and completely against the run of play your are suddenly one up.

Then some Forest posters claim "one mistake" and give no credit to Sammon for taking the ball off Gillet and making a superb run and pass to Ward in spite of Gillet trying desperately to haul down Sammon from behind.

It was typical Forest Thuggery with fouls all over the pitch. And did you see the creepy Alex McCleish querying if he'd done well of your Arab owner?

I meant to add that if I had to watch such rubbish football week-in week-out I would genuinely give it up. No wonder your crowds are so poor.

All this from Derby fans... but we're still above you?

Talking about our standards?

We're off for a promotion hunt now lads, whilst your season has well and truly ended. Enjoy chasing your dream of 12th place, watching it sail over Sammon's head when your Plan A of hoofball doesn't come off.

Want to bet that you will be playing us again next season spotty (and not the cup)? You are having delusions of adequacy if you believe Forest are on a promotion hunt. Good to know though that you found what you wrote was funny.

Funny how Derby fans can pipe up on forums, but when their team needs them most?

In the stands was the time to do the talking, to push them onto victory, and you failed your young team.

Abysmal support. 29k Derby fans wasn't there? You really wouldn't have thought it. Pity you couldn't find it in yourselves to contribute to the atmosphere.

So Spotty Forest fans couldn't urge their team on to even a draw at their own kennel, even when gifted a first minute goal and against 10 men. How do you explain that? Is it because your fans are pathetic?

You're right 666, that is funny!

Anyhow, genuine question, do you really think you lot would be significantly better off if you ditched NLN? Surely (and this may be just my view) he has managed to help elevate a club like yours to an unnaturally high position in the league - especially with the (apparent) limited finances. Who do you honestly think would be a better replacement? (we have tried the 'changing manager game' several times, and it's not always as successful as you may think it would be!)

The regime under GSE has been forced to focus on the academy and gambling on lower league players with potential: Clough and Wassall have done well in that respect.

The paying off of players and running down contracts: all GSE.

The actual management of the players, how they're deployed and when, is poor. I doubt any manager out there could do any worse and certainly wouldn't make the same basic errors time and time again.

Very poor tactician, useless at substitutions, practically sabotaged us on Saturday by rushing back unfit players to shoehorn them into a formation which rarely works. Pathetic showings on the road for four years now: time to go.

My view is that NLN has been the difference between our sides in recent meetings. He certainly out physced SoD. Maybe it's that thing of trying especially hard against an old team.

But my question was, who do you think could do better (that would actually think of coming to a place like PP)

You never know what you've got 'til it's gone.

Agreed treble six,Nigel isn't and never will be able to manage Derby as he would like when the meanies have got him in a headlock,he was a yes man at Florist as he his at DCFC..time for a change GSE go and get Adkins..

Why do you think managers would not want to come to Derby..?

FFP is a reality that they're all getting used to. When you see the potential for well-managed clubs to get in and amongst the candidates in this league without spending vast sums, it only makes it more frustrating when your own club messes about with tactics that just don't work.

Where do we go next..? When Clough has spent bigger money (relatively speaking) he's not been great; for an ex-forward, his ability to spot a striker is terrible, with his pursuit of Sammon and big wage award to Tyson just two examples. Sammon does a job for us in a system that is completely geared to fail him, so why chase a player so hard for so long if you aren't going to play to his strengths? Make no bones about it, Sammon represents the biggest fee Clough has outlaid, and he's wasted in a 451. He's no Drogba but he'd do better with a strike partner: for the most part, Clough would rather name 5 strikers on the bench than start with two on the pitch.

Crazy, and infuriating.

Well, you could turn that question on it's head for starters. Why would they? Big debt and loss making. Owners that obviously don't have the will (if not the ability) to invest. Why would you bother? Under the Derby regime, the only hope is exactly the kind of recruitement policy NLN has adopted. Surely, if you are going to have a pop at anyone, it has to be the owners first.

And as for Nigels tactics, he is probably aware that if you want to stop Forest playing, you need to swamp the mid-field. When we've come unstuck this season, it's generally by teams that done that same thing.

For what's it worth, I think you ask interesting questions and make good points.

We were linked with Dean Saunders four years ago. Now he has got his opportunity at a Championship club. What's the first thing he does? Tell fans that it'll take two years to sort out the mess. Talk about anti-climax. Maybe Clough should have done that because that's what he had to do.

Expecatations are big at Derby, but they are not matched by resources.

posted on 21/1/13

How many clubs are debt-free and post profits, do you think..?

The owners determine the resources: Clough's job is to get the best out of what he has, and in my opinion he does that too infrequently. Some of that can be attributed to the impetuous nature of the youngsters we have, but mostly it's down to Clough insisting on tactics that do not work, even playing players out of position to do so. How can this team form vital partnerships when Clough plays different people in different roles in different formations so regularly?

posted on 21/1/13

there are many times when you can point to a confusing selection or decision by Clough as contributing to losing points. You can never point to resources losing points, unless you equally attribute winning of points to it.

I predicted a couple of weeks ago, when someone made a gloating post, that Clough is likely to make some bizarre tactical decision and cost us points, then low and behold, two consecutive games, two stupid selections, 5 lost points.

I'm sorry, I don't agree with either of you. I think teams with larger squads (resources) eventually win out over the season and this is beginning to show. For a start, we don't have like for like replacements to draw on, which means occasionally experimenting/trying something different.

I said around Christmas that we could have been doing with a loan, because of tiredness and injury, the heavy pitches and quick succession of games over the festive period. I remember seeing us in winter 2010 during our good run and being shocked at how lethargic we looked. It's not like we can go out and bring in players or draw on a pool of players.

And then the lack of experience, which costs. Look at the relative age of the team, Hendrick & Hughes (21 soon & 17).

I don't think Clough cost us 5pts. Brighton was always going to be difficult, a first minute goal didn't help (see Poyet's comments about how it settled their nerves) & we did well to hang on for a point against Forest. They passed the ball better on the day, nothing to do with tactics.

Wolves have the biggest squad, Blackburn have a big squad, Leicester have a big squad.

Palace have a small squad, Watford have a small squad, Cardiff have a small squad, Peterborough have a small squad.

There are no hard and fast rules, just myths and misconceptions. We didnt look tired, as much as disorganised and demotivated on Saturday. Comments were made after Boro and Tranmere that Derby look fitter than at anytime in recent memory.

The bit about Clough costing us points is obviously subjective, and hypothetical. But I don't feel like I'm clutching at straws by saying we might've done better keeping things unchanged from the previous two games.
