We don't have anyone else at the club who does what he does.
There are better target men out there but he is fairly good at that job. You cannot fault his work rate and it was precisely that which got us the goal on Saturday.
He puts himself about and occupies defenders which then allows space for the supporting midfielders to work.
So it's Yay from me.
And Spotty can smoke my pole.
thats why its a nay for me... if he is the best we have at doing what he does (in my opinion not very well), he should not be in the team, and we should not be playing that formation.
I think Sammon is the best target man we've had since Kucqi. One day I'll spell it right. But Sammon is physical and a handful. His first touch sometimes lets him down but he troubles defenders. Ask Gillet after the Forest game.
He needs a second striker alongside him though. Ward or Jacobs or Theo
and yes... spotty... why dont you just go and lick a thistle or something.

Completely agree with Rameses.
He no world beater but takes a lot of undeserved flak at matches and on these boards. If & when we get players around him he's an effective targetman at this level. The problem comes when we have a deep 5-man midfield and he's isolated up top.
We need to get Ward and Jacobs around him as often as possible.
For some reason, some Derby fans just love to have a boo-boy, always have done!
I'm going to give him a Yay, he does an often thankless job for the team. You need a physical presence up front in this league. I think it should be remembered that Ward has been out for three months and the manager probably earmarked them as a strike partnership.
YAY from me - it's not so much what Conner Sammon does but the system he has to play in. He works, harasses and scares the siht out of defenders.
There seems to be a mis-conception that Sammon is a goal poaching, goal hanging lithe, continental type striker (whatever that may be) - he ain't.
Get used to it, he performs a function and without him, we would struggle.
I also dislike the easy abuse he gets - he's a Derby County player - support him.
YAY
Still undecided. But like already mentioned, ill support him.
It's a Yay from me. Perfect for your hoofball system

Cheers ZZ.

Jesus Baz.
Most Professional footballers can't be bothered to learn how to kick with their weaker foot. They miss the target completely more often than hit it, they they foul people because they miss time tackles, they give away the ball, they score own goals, they fall over their feet and trip up, they miss open goals. And they are just the ones who earn over £100,000 a week.
But you seem to want Sammon to be perfect
He does what he does and in my opinion we get value for money.
I want him to do well, but if I'm being honest, I think Sammon is a poor footballer. He doesn't offer much else other than endeavour. Before Saturday, I'd have said he'll go down in history on the same list as the likes of Eddie Lewis, Darren Moore, Jeff Kenna etc for me, lacking in quality, but seemingly high in effort. However, after Saturday, he's going in the same list as Kenny Miller and co, going through the motions.
I witnessed Sammon doing exactly what Miller did, jumping under the ball, but not really being committed to win it. IN fact the only thing he won, was at shoulder height because he couldn't jump under it. He doesn't put himself about nearly enough for me.
If you look back to when Howard, Hulse and even Steve Davies were playing the lone target man, each of them was subject to being fouled and knocked over by the opposition defenders, Sammon is so far away from the defender, it's not even a battle!
So, sadly, a 'nay' for me. I'd rather have Chris Porter back.
I'm with Backo on this, whichever way he votes
Did Derby actually pay 1.2m for him or was it based on appearences, goals scores and a possible promotion.
Just thought I'd ask as I have no idea.
Someome at work claimed it was 500k upfront with the rest based on the above, either way IMO it was value and it will show in our automatic promotion next season.
Mostyn
Id class him with Derek Hales and Claude Davies.
Theo has the same problem, however, he does have speed and tenacity.
I feel sorry for Clough, finally managed to spend a decent amount and look what he got. Im sure GSE or tge investors will take note. Bargain basement or acadamy from now.
By the way throw Mason in, we seem to do well with the young uns
A may {be}?
Connor Sammon requires a strike partner to be successful. Prior to Ward being injured when they played together they were looking decent. Robinson and Sammon just doesn't seem to work. Partly due to poor positioning and weak first touch from Robinson.
Against Blackburn and Hull Sammon played as a lone striker and was not great and I'd agree with Ramsfansbaz's comments. He's so isolated by himself he requires someone to be on the end of his flicks and headers. If he manages to play 5-10 matches with a fit Jaime Ward I can see the partnership at Championship level being in the top 5.
By the way who remembers kicking off about Ward playing as a striker and not a left winger from last season? His best position is up front and he's starting to show his quality this season. How many has he scored against Forest now?
Personally i'd like to have seen how the Davies / Robinson partnership would have developed this season or have them as back up to Sammon / Ward.
it's a yay from me for now. Lets just hope he can improve on his heading ability and his goal scoring. One thing I will give him credit for, is his work rate, doesn't stop for the whole 90 minutes, and that's Nigel's sort of player.
Zigger, I am too young to remember Hales, and I think Claude lacked the intelligence to play naturally without good coaching. I think he'd have done a lot better if Davies had stayed longer, such is Davies' talent for organising a defence. Claude would never look any good under Jewell's poor defensive coaching, and now Clough's poor defensive coaching, which still remains.
Doesn't matter how classy the defender, Derby's defence ALWAYS look panicky.
