I'm unsure if the people who birthed these characters were simple, they've succesfully controlled masses for a fair amount of time.
For those still believing in this bronze age cobblers it could be argued but it's probably still harsh.

I think you could argue they were simple-minded, but it was a simple-minded time when the human race was still relatively in its infancy, particularly in terms of academic thought which explains why religion 'took off'

These are people who thought the earth was flat, that 'god' could create plants before light, and that when the bible was written, people believed the earth was only around 4-5000 years old.

They also built things which can't be explained to precise angles and lengths, so much so that the rays of the sun are able to shine down at precise times of the year.

Pretty intelligent if you ask me. Yes there were simple-minded but not the people who created religion. They created something and it worked, they were able to control the simple-minded. There are still simple-minded today.
