Agree. Even though Wednesday and Bristol fluked two late wins there was nothing more we could do today than win and keep the momentum going, and even if we are now 7 points adrift our recent results and performances have left me in a positive frame of mind.
On the game itself, talk about a game of two halves! In the first 45 we were dreadful and looked nothing like the side that had won 2 of the last 3. Hull stroked the ball around and threatened our weak-looking back line through numerous set pieces, and should have been comfortably ahead at the break. And that's not even counting the penalty they should have had. We were strangely poor on the ball, struggled to retain possession and were hassled and harried by Hull at every opportunity.
The second half however belonged to us. We came out looking sharper, passed the ball around well and looked confident on the ball. Off the ball, Perkins and Etuhu were excellent in their positioning and tackling. Defensively we looked a hell of a lot more solid. And, in a reverse of last week's game, we made Hull pay by taking the only real chance we had in the game, Dagnall finally smashing the ball in after he, Harewood and Golbourne had efforts saved/blocked. After the goal Hull rarely threatened and the few chances they had were dealt with well by Steele.
As Flitcroft has said, we won ugly and made Hull pay for their profligacy. And this is exactly what we need to do to stay up. We have a massive 3 months ahead of us in which the odds will be against us, but 3 wins out of 4 and only 1 goal conceded is not a bad start. Let's keep that momentum going on Tuesday and really give ourselves a fighting chance.
Very good analysis JamesTyke. We can but hope, but at least we're getting some lately. Early days for Flitcroft right now but confidence is what it's all about - he seems to be gleaning it from and developing it within the team, and we the fans need to wrap him and the squad in some proper Barnsley appreciation to keep it going. 5th round draw tomorrow - repeat of us knocking out Man Utd as of 97-98 season? Still remember that glorious Oakwell night. Hope can calm and repair all ills... COYR!!!
Unbeaten in 4 games is a good place to be. Think Flicker's shift to a proper wing back system has been key, it seems to suit the players we've got and playing 3 at the back makes us a bit more solid.
Also would like to mention Tom Kennedy, played in all 5 matches since KH left and his contribution and calmness at the back shouldn't be underestimated.
Agree about the other league results, but we've got to win our home games (particularly) and try to drag teams like Huddersfield and Wolves back into the 'mini league'.
Looking forward to Tuesday night's game. UTR.
"We've got bigger fish to fry" - Steve Bruce. Oh - so that's why you are happy to lose? Disrespectful.
Agree about Kennedy, he's come into the team from obscurity and done well. As for Bruce, to be fair I think any team gunning for promotion wouldn't be too gutted about being knocked out the cup, and I would even say the same if we had lost today. which is what anyone would say after being knocked out.
Still, I'm not going to take anything away from our win today as it can only spur us on, with the added incentive of a possible money-spinning tie with Manchester Utd/City/Liverpool. We need the money and we also need to stay up, and at the moment we still have a decent chance of getting both.
Sorry, ignore the 'which is what anyone would say after being knocked out' bit. I'm blaming the
