The Champions League is perfect as it is now, it is the strongest it has ever been and any move to tamper with a perfect format seems ridiculous.

No chance. With the money that's being generated by the CL, you won't have a single club in the CL agreeing to this change.

Spot on OP

The Champions League is a flawed concept designed to make vast amounts of money - advertising, sponsorship etc - for UEFA.

If it's a Champions League why don't only national champions play in it?

Because UEFA wants money. And lots of it. Simples.

A champions league without the likes of Manchester United, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and AC Milan would be a poor competition.

To have one place just for the champions would lead to a borefest stroll for the champions of England, Spain, Germany and Italy. Montpellier being the 5th best team in the competition?

Football has moved on a long way from the days of the European Cup, and the 3 European competitions.

well if united won the premiership, barcelona won la liga, ac milan won seria a and bayern won the german league they would all be in it!

It could replace the Europa league, which is essentially a terrible and pointless competition.

But I like the CL pretty much as it is

But last season they didn't.
And then you would just swap them for the teams who did win the league.

The Europa Cup would be a far better competition than the Champions League, no-one would give a feck about Real Madrid v FC Cluj and Nordjaellens v Dortmund, Montpellier v the champions of Azerbaijan in the knock out stages when you have Barcelona v United, Arsenal v Bayern, AC Milan v PSG and the likes.

All this would do is swap the disdain of the Europa Cup to the Champions League and make the Europa Cup the real big trophy.

but then you would have no city, no real, no dortmund and no juventus.

i do see where you are coming from with your OP.

if i was to change it i would make it the top 2 teams qualify only.

Why exactly do people want the format changed? I have never really seen someome give a good reason.

I would argue that the group stage already suffers a bit from a lack of quality and even games. Taking out 8 or 9 teams and replacing them with lower quality teams would make it even worse.
In this case you would have to cut the number of teams in the group stage down.

They see the word "Champions" in the competition title and get all píssy about it.

no matter what anyone says european cup for champions is a joke.

It will be a cakewalk for many teams, totally inferior to the current CL.

DJeezus is right, people get precious over the champions tag, especially pool fans, they need to accept the current CL gives the best quality football anywhere around the world.

Bring back the Herbert Chapman Trophy

Would love to see a genuine league of say 16 of Europe's champions and the rest go into a merge of CL and EL. It will help to deter top players from simply going to a top four side just because they have CL football and restore a balance. Of course it means less money so to hell with that ever happening.

Maybe they should just rename it the European League Cup as very few national champions win it and your qualification is based on league placing and not trophy success. And then they could call the Europa League the UEFA Cup Winners Cup.

I respect any team that eventually wins the 'Big One' but feel it's a little tainted if you have only qualified by finishing 4th in your domestic competition miles behind other teams.'Champion' should stand for something but in the case of the CL it does not.

the only thing wrong with the current CL format is the amount of money it gives the participants.

I'm not surprised that an Evertonian would endorse this.

It was a poor competition that was righly removed from football just as all the winners should remove it from their honours page
