Football manager 2008 ruined an entire weekend of surfing in cornwall for me.......

but i still play it every now and then

I still play 2008 which I've continuously updated through the editor to remain current. Sorry Sprts Interactive but you ain't getting another penny from me

How do you update? Do you have to manually update it? Sounds pretty long whinded!

I remember going to bed having played the game and then waking up again in the middle of the night and getting back on it!

Do you just download the updates?

I have FM 08-10 and FM13

The match engine is a bit poor in fm13, I wouldn't start a long term save until that is updated in the next couple of weeks.

Other than that, get your head around shouts and keep it simple and you should be fine.

Yep, exactly that. Use transfer websites at the end of each month to find out who has gone where and use the in-game editor to update. Probably over 200+ hours of work altogether. Back it up externally on a weekly basis to make sure I don't get caught short.

I realise this makes me look a bit geeky but I don't have to wait for new versions to have up to date squads and once you know what you're doing you can make changes pretty quickly.

Diggler will no doubt comment on this thread - he's done the same as me but I think from Championship Manager 01 - now THAT'S dedication!!

Champagne-SuperNovak,

Why don't you just download it? There are people on the SI Games forum and Sortitout Si that send updates after every transfer window and that is world wide.

Melton

I started updating in 2009 and found user updates ran dry by 2010 so now I just do it manually. I also refuse to hook the old laptop up to the web as its such an old model that it would get viruses for fun and I use the machine exclusively for FM08, there is literally nothing else on it.

The other advantage is that I decide how good a player is. A lot of previous updates were seemingly done by folk who just take the word of various media outlets when determining how good a player is. Like I say, it's geeky, but I'm pretty proud of how well it's turned out.

Does anyone play 13 handheld? I've got it on my iPhone but its a bit odd. Started a career with Man City and I scored about 6 goals in my first 14 games despite not conceding many either. So many 0-0 games. I had a front 2 of Aguero & Falcao with Tevez & Dzeko as backup so it's not like I was short of firepower! Anyone else had similar problems or know what I might be doing wrong??

Great game! I have it!

I have, it's really basic, and addictive due to that fact!

Gotta muck about with formation and tactics and stuff, think there was a few bugs for it, check out for an update with the app store!

I play either

4-1-3-2 at home

and

4-1-2-2 (wide)-1 away!

Balanced, man on man, mixed passing, normal tackling

Diggler will probably comment

Championship/Football Manager, of course I will

I dont manually update but take the fan-made updates off the CM01/02 website which are released after every window.

I only managed 8 seasons from September

Although my reserve lineup features Messi, Rooney, Ronaldo, Gomez, Falcao among others

Fair point Novak, if I had the time, I would probably do similar! Are you putting in new players as well then? You haven't upped huddersfields players at all have you...

posted on 1/2/13

Totally fair Melton though it can be hard to resist! Think Hudds came 17th on my last test run so not too shabby really.

The only flaw is with the new players. I don't really want to age the existing players as you need certain people playing in certain tournaments, especially with the game starting in July 07, but it's a bit of a bugbear having people like Rooney and Cleverley of a similar age. I could start the new players as 14 year olds but their development can be temperamental so I just grin and bear it. Also, the likes of Eto'o, Henry and Drogba are always almost immediately bought by big European teams which is a tad annoying. I'll suss something out!

You could always set a retirement date for the players you don't want to ever move clubs. That way they never sign for anyone else.

posted on 2/2/13

Not a bad plan Keith also thought about putting them on loan at their clubs for 5+ years, maybe setting a future transfer date to the same club at the end of the loan, should take them deep into their thirties and off the wish lists of Milan, Madrid and Juve.

Only problem with doing all those loans is that you can only have a certain number of loan players in your squad.

posted on 4/2/13

Can you not just edit the starting season then?

posted on 5/2/13

I meant the other way around, e.g. Drogba is loaned from Chelsea to Shenhua for 3/4 years, with no recall clause and a future transfer set up to them at the end of the loan. Stick him on 300k a week and not many clubs would approach a 30something player on that money.

Gonna try it out. Should have finished my January window update by tonight!

Is the starting season hardcoded Novak?
