Barnsley football club is also known as “The Tykes", which is a colloquial term for Yorkshiremen. The word ‘Tyke’ refers to a small terrier dog that was often used for catching rats. These dogs used to be commonly owned in Yorkshire, so ‘Tyke’ became a nickname for someone who was born and bred in the county.
Also Yorkshire Cricket Club have adopted this nickname.

Good god I am nervous about tonight. For once all the pressure is on us and given our current form we are expected to win, something we never seem to do when placed as favourites. The way we've been playing under Flitcroft has been superb, winning 7 of the last 9, Wolves on the other hand haven't won at all since 21st December.
All good runs come to an end, and ours will at some point, but 3 points tonight would be the most important of our season so far, lifting us out of the relegation zone and plunging Wolves into it. We also have another massive game at Bristol City next week, where another 3 points would put daylight between us and the bottom 3. 4 points from 6 would do me absolutely fine, but I've a horrible feeling that Wolves could upset the odds tonight. Please prove me wrong Flicker and Co.
You Reds!
Wolves fan here...
Well done on an important win tonight.
Listened in to the match and it seemed we couldn't cope with Harewood.
Good luck for the rest of the season.
You Reds!

Wow I want to know what Flitcrofts put in water!
Firstly thanks Matador for your kind comments, sure Wolves will end their bad run soon. But another fantastic result and crucial 3 points putting us above Huddersfield and finally out of the drop zone. Flitcroft - however you're motivating the boys, keep it up. Brilliant result again, bring on Brizzle and lets keep climbing up that table! COYR!!!
Cheers Matador, all runs good or bad eventually come to an end and our fortunes could well be reversed in no time, such is the unpredictable nature of this division.
For now though, what a run Flitcroft is taking us on. Another win, and the most important so far (until Saturday). Given our record in games we're expected to win, Sigurdarsson's excellently taken goal had me thinking we'd blown it as early as the 7th minute. But what a response! I'm so happy for Dagnall, he really is putting the doubters to bed and that's 7 in 8 for him, Mellis may have been slightly fortunate with his goal but they all count and that is exactly the sort of thing we were missing under Hill. Everyone worked their socks off again, Steele continued to show why he is one of the best keepers in the division with an outstanding stop that kept it at 1-1, O'Grady won plenty of headers on the left of a front 3, and Cranie was the standout defender for me. Brilliant to see Harewood and Flitcroft firing up the Ponty End after the game as well, it almost brings a tear to my eye to know that for once we have a manager and team who really care about the club and the supporters. It was also great to see an increase in attendance, and I hope the grit and determination on show tonight will bring the extra fans back for the run in.
Credit as well to the decent number of Wolves fans that came up on a cold night to support a team which really isn't in the best of form at the moment
We have an absolutely massive game on Saturday, a win at Ashton Gate and we're flying. If we manage to stay up Flitcroft should be given the freedom of the town, and he's looking good for that so far. Come on you Reds.
Unbelievable what Flitcroft has done with your team. You could see his passion on saturday and the desire he has installed in the players. A huge credit should go to your board for taking a chance with him at a crucial time.Too late for the playoffs?
Never, ever talk to opposition fans before the match. It never, ever ends well.
Great result Tyke types
