He came on the scene was excellent early on and then drifted a bit. The last 3/4 years he's been up there with the top bowlers in the world.
He needs to get that average below 30 to be considered a top bowler or even one of England's best considering the likes of Botham, Willis, Gough, Caddick all averaged well under 30.
On current form he is one of the best behind Styen.
Be interesting to see his average over the last 4 years.. Hes been sublime in that time.Only seem bowler to get anything out in India on both sides.
only seam bowler? ok he was gd, and backed the spinners well, but his performance wasnt like out of the world. how many wickets did he pick up in the india series?
I think steyn has done better in indian conditions. in 7 matches anderson has picked up 22 wickets with an average of 29, and steyn has picked up 26 in 5 matches and that also with an average of 20.
but yh regardless, he has had a great turn around. Will probably go down as Englands great.
Viru you are spot on. Steyn is a level above everyone else in world cricket.
Anderson probably lead's the group after which would include Philander, Finn and Morkal.
I think Starc could be the one to follow if he does well in India and the same applies with Junaid if he can stay injury free. Also interested to see how Kumar play's in the test arena.
In summary the pace bowling department in the modern era is pretty crap if you take Steyn out of it.
Notice how no aussie bowler is getting a mention Jimmy will average well under 30 at the end ofhis ccareer, even after the 3 test series against N Z.
Oh and comparing Anderson with Steyn in India is a bit daft, England Have 2 world class spinners who took the bulk of the wickets, S A don't have that, so the wickets will be spread more around the spinners.
"Be interesting to see his average over the last 4 years.. Hes been sublime in that time.Only seem bowler to get anything out in India on both sides."
Steyn?
"Anderson probably lead's the group after which would include Philander, Finn and Morkal. "
Finn? Really?
"I think Starc could be the one to follow if he does well in India"
Pattinson is probably a better bowler. Currently HIlfenhaus and Siddle are both better than Starc IMHO.
In the last 2 years:
Steyn 89 @ 21
Philander 87 @ 17
Anderson 76 @ 28
Broad 73 @ 27
Siddle 67 @ 25
Clearly Philander and Steyn are far ahead, Anderson is obviously the best seamer outside of the SA team.
I was on about the recent test series! between India and England. Starc will bowl a very hittable lenght.. He was only bowling at the west-indies who kept missing straight balls. And that was in the odi series.
Can i ask where i actually mentioned Steyn Vs Anderson in India? i just didnt..did i??

Jimmy is the second best seam bowler in the world. He isn't far behind Steyn.
His test match bowling, particularly at the start of the innings, is sensational. He has an amazing knack of grabbing a couple of early wickets, or pick up a crucial wicket of a stubborn middle order batsmen.

england, i know you didnt mention steyn but you did mention only seam bowler who has done well in india. thats what why I brought up steyn.
The good about both steyn and anderson is both have managed to play series after series without getting injured. I think that is a great thing as most pace bowlers are breaking down after 2 matches.
I think steyn undoubtably will go down as one of the greats. I just dont remember when was the last time he wasnt no.1 in the test ranking. That itself says alot about him
