Don't the lions always take 1 player who is uncapped at international level as a tradition?

posted on 2/3/13

it's a tradition that's been exercised about twice in the modern era from the looks of it.

Apparently Guscott was selected for the Lions before the Romania game, but played before the tour.

Take Wade for the mid-week games - even if just for the excitement factor

No offence Gentlemen but reading through your suggestions above, you may as well change the title to English Lions tour of Australia.

I think it would be an amazing turn up for the books if so many English players start for the Lions.

England right now are the best team in Europe, but it's a team with great cohesion and better than the sum of its parts. Individually there is a lot of competition and Individuals make up the Lions and in that department I think that there is a lot of competition in all of the home nations for places. 10 or 11 from one country in the starting 15 is very unlikely.

Fair point Ding.

I can't see England having less than 3 in the pack, or less than 3 in the backs personally.

addisons, good side, IMO though you cant leave chris robshaw out, been the player of the tournament so far and has exceeded all expectations as a player and captain of england in the last 18 months, between him and BOD for the lions captaincy for me

Yes addisons. That's a good looking side.

Agree with Mex regarding Robshow. He's not the best player in his position but hes a leader and i reckon that's just as important and makes him great.

Also I would have Kearney for his left Peg and more importantly his aerial skills because Kurtley Beale it a mighty kick chase player and i would want a fullback who could take him on and shut him down. That said Kearney is sometimes a little hesitant in defence tho im not sure the other options available are any better in that department.
Kearney for me.

As a Welshman I don't see the buzz around Cuthbert everyone else does, if you are going for Hogg at FB I would play Halfpenny RW. A back 3 of North Hogg and HP would be awesome, with Kearney to come in too.

I can't see Sexton being 1st choice.

10's a real weakness. I can see flood getting it tbh.

Farrell for me at the moment, will be intertesting to see Biggar against Scotland and England, slowly getting better.

Everyone wants a player selected out of the blue = Henson (joking).

I think I am the only person who actually likes Henson.

I do actually like him and he was great, but he has had waaaayyyyy to many chances now. Shame. I have always been a fan of flair at 10 so would love Hook to get a run of games, but won't happen.

Cobnob Hook has never been a ten. Regardless of everyone telling him he is, and even playing there in France, he has never had a good performance at ten in all the games i have seen him play in a wales jersey he was never more than average at ten.

That said he was a hell of an inside center, he had it all, step, pace distribution. His career was done a massive disservice by telling him he was a ten.

Sexton before the competition was the only player nailed on starting for the Lions. Amazing how things change so quickly

But that said when you cut out the emotion and look at it objectively, Sexton is still the best ten in Europe for my money, however i wouldn't complain if Farrell was in, but Flood no way. I'm sorry he can be good but then he can be rubbish.

I want a steady head at ten, probably the most important position on the pitch. Farrell has the boot Sexton has the steady head.

Yeah can't argue with most of that, I was brought up on the likes of Arwel Thomas, so kinda like the bit of magic a lot of rubbish approach. It was always exciting one way or the other!

Agree that Flood never really does enough.

Of all the players that could (or could have) be in contention Farrell, Sexton, Biggar, Preistland, Flood, O Gara? None of them really excite me. Whats happened to Henson mk2 Ciprianni, is he playing much? How far down the pecking order is he, at least he was good in attack. Or has he blown it too? Sorry don't watch much English rugby.

Arwel Thomas
---------------------

He was interviewed once in the daily telegraph.

They had a feature there for a while where people would be interviewed and all have to answer the same set questions.

One question was "what are you asked the most" or something like that.

Arwel Thomas's answer was, "Are you Arwel Thomas ?"

I used to see him in a night club all the time, he was tiny! Had a disagreement with him and Gibbs once!
