BBC

Newcastle United fans have been warned not to taunt new Sunderland manager Paolo Di Canio with fascist salutes during Sunday's North East derby match.

The 44-year-old issued a statement shortly after joining Sunderland last month insisting he does not "support the ideology of fascism". But the Italian was fined for making right-arm salutes to Lazio fans as a player in 2005.

Northumbria Police said such gestures would not be treated "as a joke".

Ch Supt Steve Neill said: "Offensive gestures, particularly those with a suggestion of racist connotations, are completely unacceptable. We will take positive action against anyone seen acting in an offensive or racist manner."

How dare a man with a job have political beliefs outside his job and wish to keep them there

The British media have precisely zero right to question the morals or ethics of any human being.

Di Canio should tell all his player to go out and HACK every single one of the Newcastle players.

No Serial, your opinion is fair enough, just hate the hypocrisy of the media.....so it's fine as long as he's managing a small team like Swindon

In fairness I don't think people were too stoked about him managing Swindon.

If Di Cano wanted to join the KKK or the Facist appreciation society outside of a football stadium, i wouldn't give a feck about his beliefs of political stance.

But he pulled a facist salute, in a football match, amongst fans notorious for racist chanting and victimisation of many African italian immigrants. That, to me, is not on.

I agree about the British media though. Didn;t hear much in Sky when he was boss at Swindon.

..apart from the Swindon fans that is.
