Kinda understand why Porto played like they did to be honest, they saw your last few games, the goals scored and the chances created and imo it would have been a poor choice by their manager to go right at you, whenever they didn't have the ball they got their defensive shape sorted quickly and their full backs stayed wide to stop anything coming from there
Not a great watch but efficient nevertheless?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Porto are a very smart side who've had plenty of success over the years playing the wolf in sheep's clothing, going all the way back to their first EC title in 1986.
Players and managers come and go, but that's the kind of success that breathes confidence into a club going into these ties. It's a belief that runs through the club and filters through to everyone involved.
Arsenal are still capable of giving them a mauling back at the Emirates, but for now Porto have drawn first blood and have given the Gunners a lot to think about.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Oh for sure that goal gives the second leg an edge neutrals will enjoy, I do feel that Arsenal will beat them but if Porto managed to score there it would make the game a great watch
On the bright side, I don't think any gooner expects us to win the CL, so if we do go out makes it very difficult for Spurs or Man U unless they get to 4th.
No 5th place CL qualification.

I see we have found another scapegoat reading through the last few comments ffs. Martinelli had a game off but had only Kiwior on his side who feed him. Kiwi could have played the ball to him way earlier on several occasions. Martinelli had a game to forget I agree but make him a scapegoat is simply not on when the whole team didnt klick last night. We missed everything. Aggression, pace, passing was off.
We really can't underestimate the fact that Porto brought through their whole game plan with all the dark arts you need. We havent found an answer.

Before or after the game?
How is trying to work out how to get the best out of Martinelli making him a scapegoat?

Arteta is from the [Pep] Guardiola school, who is the coach with the most titles in the world.
"They think that the best way to beat their opponents is to have more possession of the ball, but that depends on the team and the performers they have.
"We had 40%-60% possession of the ball, which is not a scandal. I didn’t mind having 30%-70% and winning too. It all depends on what you do with the ball within the strategy defined to score goals."
Sergio Conceicao (Porto's coach):
"Arsenal wanted to play... We wanted to win."
We will see in the second leg.
Aye Arteta is Guradiola school and Conceicao from Mourinhos'.
Conçeicão is pretty versatile though. They were quite fearless in Barcelona earlier this year, and also took the game to Atlético last season, iirc.
Speaking of Mourinho disciples - though I don't actually know whether he is one, it seems Thiago Motta looks like one of the managerial success stories of the year in Italy.

I don't get it, how is that "chatting shɪt"?
Nothing untoward or disrespectful that I can see.
Porto are a defensive side and they knew one of our key strengths were set pieces and used all the tricks in the book to cancel that out.
It was definitely one of those games where we needed a physical presence up front to get Pepe into a battle.
Cheers for that Paul Merson
No worries Clinton Morrison.
Pleased to help Tim Sherwood.
Honestly I laughed when Porto scored. As soon as Marti gave the ball away my head was in my hands. We are so predictable in Europe that it’s become laughable.
The worry for me is our momentum has potentially slowed down just in time for the entire state of Saudi Arabia to be parked in front of Newcastle’s goal on Saturday.
Not worried about turning the leg around at the Emirates although it wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if we bottle it
Arsenal 1 - 1 Porto
Most predictable second leg score ever
Cheers for that Jamie Mackie.
