Good and at his very best great but you're right, he never hit the very top heights even in his prime. I'd argue he's never once been United's best player even in all his 20+ years at the club.

O god, they just asked on Soccer A.M who's better Giggs or Bale. Bale has to perform at this level for a good few years not a few games before this question gets asked.

Agree with that LDS he's never been considered the most influential/best player in the team at any given team.

Since Giggs has been about the following players have been considered the most important player to the team yet Giggs never has.

Cantona
Keane/Scholes
Beckham
Nistelrooy
Ronaldo
Rooney
and now Van Persie

another kid too young to remember gigg's talent. giggs is the greatest winger ever in the PL.

giggs in englands football team would have meant major trophies for england. thats how good he is/was

only ronaldo could have surpassed him as a winger, no one else comes close. but ronaldo was mainly a forward once he improved his game so we never know.

pls don't mentioned the likes of zola, pires or overmars in the same breath - its an embarassment to the great man who should be knighted for his contribution to football.

Lol i'm 26 and have been watching him since I was 5. Lol sorry but Pires in his prime was on the same level as Giggs.

Had Giggs retired at 33 or so he wouldn't be regarded so high.

Perhaps Pires in his prime was on the same level as Giggs. The most important words in that sentence are "in his prime". This is a list (from Wiki so it may be slightly wrong) of Pires' clubs:

1993–1998 Metz 162 (43)
1998–2000 Marseille 66 (8)
2000–2006 Arsenal 189 (62)
2006–2010 Villarreal 102 (13)
2010–2011 Aston Villa 9 (0)

Now Arsenal 200-2006 can be regarded as a top side. Villareal blow hot and cold and Marseille were good in the French league. Metz and Villa aren't great.

Giggs has played, for 20 years, at the top level, at the best club in the last 20 years. That is why he is regarded so highly. Not because he's a Ronaldo or a Messi. It's because he's played at the top level for that long and rarely looked off the pace (except in CM in all fairness)

Robert Pires on same level as Giggs?

Arsenal fans on this board are by far the most deluded set of fans ever.

How many best ever PL teams does Pires get voted into? None. Giggs is in almost every one.

Not fit to lace his boots. Good player though just not Ryan Giggs. How many truly great seasons did he give Arsenal anyway? A couple at best.

Ye but that's the point, just cause he's played at a high standard for a long time doesn't mean he should be considered in the same bracket as the very best.

I've not seen a comparison between Giggs and Pele/Maradona/Ronaldo/Messi. Any where.

People confusing the prime with longevity. Pires at his prime as good as Giggs it's true. But Giggs has had a longer career where he's been at top level. It's like Ronaldinho at his prime good as Zidane maybe better but Zidane had a longer career at top level hence regarded higher. But when it comes to prime pretty hard to separate them. Extreme analogy but this is same with Giggs and Pures.

Nothing to do with longevity.

Giggs was a much better player in his 20's and early 30's than Pires ever was.

Highs was far better than Pores ever was. Look at how he used to play in Europe. His goals home and away against juventus we're world class. The guy is still class now but at his peak he shitt on not only Pires but any other winger in the history of the premier league bar Ronaldo

Aurocorrect fail. Giggs and Pires. Damn phone.

Exactly.

Great players earn their status in the really big games when it really matters. Can't remember too many times when Pires single handedly got Arsenal over the line on the biggest of matches; Champions League games, title deciders, Fa cup semi finals / finals.

Giggs has done all of those on countless occassions for us.
