I can see him leaving for sure, have seen it coming a mile away. I think Vermaelen is a great player, he is just a victim of our decline and I don't see him getting out of this rut, could see him going to City or PSG but if Barca come calling he would be crazy to turn them down.

Imagine if we sold him and replaced him with a defender who can defend. It would be so unlike us

Contracts are there to protect both parties.
A club doesn't want to be in the situation we were with RvP et al.
A player doesn't want to be in a situation where he could be dumped without financial security.

That is why new contracts are signed.
