It is a staggering statistic, is it not?
Fergie's record in buying CM's is very hit and miss tbf.
He bought Roy Keane and Paul Ince who were both top drawer.
He also has bought Eric Djemba Djemba, Kleberson, Liam Miller, Ando and Hargreaves who either weren't good enough from the off, made of glass or haven't lived up to the initial promise.
I have excluded Nick Powell because of his age
----------------------------------
7 of the players you listed either play, or did play, in the reserves more than the first team and 2 have yet to play for us at all
If we are going to discount Powell, then we have to discount a fair few of those players you have listed who never or haven't yet, established themselves in the first team
It's furher skewed by the fact that since that time, we haven't always needed a new midfielder. We added Ando and Hargo to what we already had so it goes without saying we didn't need anyone else at that time
We have also promoted Clevs to the first team midfield in that time too
Still, we have needed a CM for a good 2 or 3 seasons now. Pretty sure Sir Alex has been waiting on Ando though!
Not done bad really since Anderson and Hargreaves were signed. Makes you wonder what else could have been won with a top class midfielder......but fergie loves a forward as he sees scoring goals the way to success!
Cleverley has been like a new signing. He's gone from barely playing last season to playing in all our big games apart from maybe a couple of omissions.
He has to count as a 'new' midfielder. Especially as no one moans about a lack of new right back signings when we have Rafael.
We've done well recently inspite of our midfield, not because of it.
We'd be scary good with a top drawer midfield.

The points you make are also relevant to the positions we have signed players for!! But I take your point.
My own view is we need 2 players for the middle but I'd settle for one!
(I have excluded Nick Powell because of his age as he is a signing for the future and did play up front for Crewe)
what about Henriquez then?

The barcodes paid £4.3m for Yohan Cabaye, a french International.
We paid £18m plus add ons for Anderson who hasn't played for Brazil since 2008 and £24m for a crocked English midfielder who had glass knees.
Sometimes I weap at our transfer business.

Henriquez is a forward. Lot of people saying Powell is a midfielder, yet he played up front for Crewe and has played high up the pitch for United U21s too.
Since 2007
Since 2007 we have won:
P.L - 07/08, 08/09, 10/11, 12/13 [potentially]
C.C - 08/09 and 09/10
Community Shield - 07, 08, 10, 11
C.L - 07/08
FIFA World Club - 08
Lost a P.L by goal-difference, been in another 2 C.L final and lost to one of the best teams ever.
I think we've done alright without purchasing another midfielder.
We are a club that gives our own a chance. It's what separates us from most big clubs at the the top in the P.L.

Hargo was 17m. That was disclosed
Ando's was undisclosed but I don't think your number is too wide of the mark
tbf, Ando's knees has hardly been his fault (although Iknow you can't stand the player)
You never know, he my just surprise next season with his knees seemingly back in reasonable shape. I still think there is talent hidden away but like you, I am weary now of waiting
We played Southampton at home not too long ago and Anderson's pass completion was 67% for the game. The lowest of any United midfielder for about 4 seasons I remember reading on the Caf.
He's not good enough and the boss has finally wised up to it. He didn't even make the bench for the crucial Madrid game and he was fully fit.
His knee has held up this year and he still only has 4 PL starts to his name this season. His time is up.
The reports from a few weeks ago that he's tried to leave a couple of times, I believe tbh. His career has stalled at our club. He needs to leave for his ownsake. And we need a player FAR better than him for the amount we paid.

---------------------------
Come on mate. The whole team were kack that game
Carrick has had a pass completion rate of about 67% in the least couple of weeks too. I remember being stunned at it
We will see but considering Sir Alex has been treating him with kid gloves this season to nurse his knees no doubt, I still reckon he sees a future for him
I'm more in you side of the boat on this but still..... stranger things have happened than a player fulfilling his potential in his mid 20s. Especially a player who has had the injuries Ando has
Clevs and Carrick have been as good as anything in the PL tbf.
The thing is, we only really have Clevs and Carrick in the middle. Scholes is finished. Fletcher too. Anderson can't last a whole 90 minutes let alone a game a week. Giggs is still better on the left than he is in the middle. Jones can do a job when needed but thats not often. Powell isn't ready at all.
Now, unless we going to have another round of fledglings pop up next season we need at least 1, preferably 2 central midfielders.
Strootman seems a good fit from the little i have seen and what I have read about him. But who can we really add that will not only make our midfield better but add something different (as this is what SAF seems to look at when buying players to the team).
