I personally feel that top 10 and 2 picks is ok. The top 10 have obviously made it on merit, and then the next 2 allows the captain to put his own little stamp on team.
Watching the Ryder Cup is great, but I have always felt that the role of captain is one of the most overblown in sport. It has almost become over analytical and tactical, yes, you want to put players together who have a good rapport and can play well together, but basically once they are out on the course you have no control over them, and it's just about who plays best on the day.
Totally agree. As captain, there are a number of ways you can approach your pairings and order of play in the singles matches but in the end all strategies have been tested and it really only ever comes down to how the players perform on the day. There's no point in over-thinking it.
