Apart from Rooney and Vidic United were poor. It is always difficult to evaluate a losing side's performance when they have been completely outplayed - everyone sees the brilliant Barcelona passing but look at how little time any Utd player had when passed the ball - but here goes.
The midfield players just aren't good enough. Park and Valencia underperformed woefully but Giggs is well past his best and Carrick has never been fit to fill the boots of Keane/Robson/Ince. But even if Utd had the luxury of four players like the Barca midfield they would still have lost. Before the game there was talk of Utd going to 3-4-3 if they went behind. They did go behind but I certainly didn't notice Ferdinand or Vidic stepping up to help out. Barca don't play anyone for two centre halves to mark so playing a flat back four, even playing just one at the front, still leaves you well outnumbered in the middle. Surprisingly tactically very naive.
Ferguson has to replace Giggs, Scholes and Carrick now. Obertan, Bebe, Anderson and Gibson have all had their chance to shine and haven't done so. It's that or the Mourinho way!
So why are MU the current champions with the poorest squad I can remember them having? Home wins 95%, away wins, 26%.
Half the teams that visit Old Trafford don't think they can win. How do MU do that?

It's always a tough one comparing teams from different eras, but the only team I have seen that would have given Barca a run for their money tonight was AC milan of the late 80's.Gullit,van Basten,Rijkaard,Baresi and Maldini.It would have been some contest.

I think the Real madrid side of the sixties with Di Stefano, Gento and Puskas etc would have been a match for this Barcelona side, but as you say it's difficult because of present day fitness etc.

Both those sides, Milan and Real are up there, although I never saw that Madrid team as they were before my time. I'm sure there'd be some Liverpool fans putting in a claim for their side of the late 70's too.

I'm not sure that Man Utd's defeat, or more the manner of it, proves this years PL was weak, but it would have been interesting to see how our top four in the prem would've faired in this seasons La Liga.
