It was called association football.
The "soc" of the word "association" was used to distinguish it I believe.
It's a slight variant on football in pretty much every language ever. Only the American bastardisation of English uses soccer.
It is short for "Association" as in Association Football.
Not sure if we needed a thread on it though...
It was funny that on a cult football Saturday football morning show an American referred to the sport as "soccer". The presenters got on their high horses and said "it is called football". The yank simply turned round and said "isn't this show called Soccer A.M?"
(before you ask, yes it was Soccer A.M.)
Football AM wouldn't sound right, or is that because I'm just so used to it being Soccer AM?
It's more anger at the Americans for calling their wrap-up-steroid-ridden-highschool-morons-in-cotton-wool-and-see-what-happens national sport "football". That's the real protest we have.
That's called football as well
What about "Fitba A.M." Henrik, that is quite catchy.
The Aussie call it Soccer as well.......bloody Criminals.....
I hate when American's call it Soccer......went to America once and when they asked what sport I liked I said Football.....they where confused when they found out I mean't 'soccer'. They also think that their Football was before ours and is more popular in the world. They also think its a womens sport and that all us English watch is Cricket.......
I did win when I ask why they call their game Football when the ball only touches the foot 1 or twice in a game where as in our game its 95% of the time.......
they could not answer....
