Rooney has been playing in behind Van Persie in his apparent best position all season and been poor. He's had his chances, he's just ruined them with his inconsistent first touch and lack of ingenuity in the centre. Rooney is a No.9 and one of the very best in this role. Unless we reverted to a diamond or 433 then Rooney will not be playing in what is now his best position. Plus, we have Kagawa, who is a superior No.10.

Have thought all season he should be a #9 now, brought in when RVP is injured or rested. Finishing is one of his best attributes, if not his best. Kagawa should be our first choice #10. Rooney has been great for us over the years but it's time for other players to stake their claim in this younger side. No player can keep their level forever (ahem Giggs).
Lionel, that's a bit of an understatement regarding Ronaldo and the fans, he's truly worshipped now. And despite your hatred of all things Madrid and (I guess) love of all things Barça, it's not since he started scoring against Barça, which he's been doing for quite some time now, but since he cut out a lot of the more irritating parts of his game.
Re Mourinho, CR himself said only a few days ago he couldn't care less about where Jose's future.
On the OP, it's hard to judge the value of performances based on the overall quality of the team. That Ronaldo in his final seasons was the standout performer in a great United team doesn't mean Bale would be. Many players who are stars for their club move on to United, Madrid, Barça etc and merely become another cog in the wheel.
I don't doubt Kagawa's qualities, I just wonder if we have the players around him to bring out the best of him. It's easier against lesser teams, but against the better teams, I have been disappointed at times with the lack of attacking movement in our team.
You look at Dortmund and see their free-flowing play etc, which obviously suited Kagawa's technical abilities very well, but I just wonder if we have those type of players or can play that style of football. Apart from Carrick, there are a few players in our team who don't seem to have a great first touch.
40m plus Nani, roughly close to 70m for Bale?
I would rather keep Nani

What part of roughly do you not understand?
Nani isn't being properly utilised, he's a far more gifted player than Bale and Bale truth be told isn't worth 40m.
Sorry MuDD but Bale is one of the top players in the world right now. When you see Hazard and Lucas go for huge amounts and at the time of signing they were both potential you have Bale who is the real deal and is worth a bomb.
Nani on his day and under contract with no other sides knowing there is a problem is worth a fair bit but now is probably gonna go for about £15 million.
Whatever we pay for Bale is worth it because he would transform our play like a nuclear bomb. We'd be exciting again in a way that even the biggest Nani defenders have to admit that doesn't quite happen with him playing every week.

If we can get rid of Valencia and Anderson for Bale, we should do it. Nani should already be our starting right winger, it's Valencia's lack of flexibility that has forced Nani out on the left, where he isn't as dangerous.
Bale and Nani on each wing, now that would be something special.
Robb, I'm sorry, Bale isn't woth 40m, no matter how much you want to spin it

Good points. I share these worries and have done all season. Valencia and Giggs not being in the squad and the signing of players that would be willing to actually come off the touchline would be a start, but I've gave up on this.
As for Nani, if I were in charge of another club in Europe I'd shell out a good 25-30m for him. Get him fit, play him week in, week out on the right and you've got a player that will get you around 10+ goals and 20 assists a season. Up until Mata came along, Nani was statistically the highest assist maker in the league over the past 3 seasons. Even when 'poor', he is involved in pretty much every good move in a game and will always create chances. Whichever team gets him and appreciates his talent - and doesn't have Valencia in the side - will be getting a bargain come next season. And if he's still here, he'll have the pleasure of watching Valencia smack it into the stands and offer defensive protection..
If we sign neither Bale nor Ronaldo this summer - which we won't - Rob, will you shut up about either?
Because it is incredibly maddening. Neither are our players and that is it.
I would bet my mortgage on Ronaldo staying at Madrid this season and the next. He will not leave Madrid under any circumstance this season.

I know many here like to play Football Manager but has it ever been done that United give away three, THREE, players plus cash for a player? No matter how great that player is (and Bale is a great player)?
It just would not happen. I can bet my life on it!

A winger with no skill besides kick the ball and rush and who is largely ineffective against top sides.
We have one winger at the club who terrifies defenders as well, he is inconsistent but has more natural talent than Bale.
Rather than waste 40 odd million on him, I would play that winger instead, the one who played a significant role in us winning our 19th title
40M seems a reasonable price for Bale given today's market. A different issue is who's willing to pay that sort of money in view of their current needs.
As a Madrid fan I just don't see the point. Modric made a lot more sense given our lack of creation in midfield, but why dish out so much cash on a supersub for Ronaldo? As if we didn't already have enough having to pay Kaka's exorbitant wages. Unfortunately though, that's not to say it won't happen, because Perez's logic still seems to be that the 11 most expensive players in the world would form a title winning team. And it's not just him - judging by the polls in Marca and As, unfortunately a lot of madridistas still seem to believe it too.

40M does indeed seem reasonable. But that will not buy you Bale's left foot when all parameters are considered.
And i agree with you that anything more is exorbitant.

Do people actually still buy this? He has scored goals vs us and City this season, won Spurs countless matches with wonder strikes. He is a player who can turn a game on his own, a very rare feat in the world of football.
In Europe he'd be devastating at the right club, we've already seen that Europeans don't like his direct style if play, bed ruin La Liga IMO. I don't like comparisons with Ronaldo because he is a phenom, but he has te potential to be the next best thing.
I'm sure Fergie would bite Spirs hands off at £40m !

£40m would have got Mata and Oscar and you suggest it's a deal getting one player, a single footed, kick and rush one trick pony for that?

Very different players and ones who would t suit our system nor our style of play. They dictate tempo and create for others, Bale wins games on his own, even when not playing well, sign of a great player.
