riquelme for a time between 2005-2007 was arguably the best player in the world, argentina would have won the world cup, had he not been taken off in the 1/4 final when 1-0 up vs germany, true class, not as dynamic and showy as kaka but oozed class

Loved Stoichkov and Hagi too. Other names - Rui Costa, and Mehmet Scholl. And, as a defender myself, Frank De Boer was everything I wanted to be but wasn't

And, from my Rovers, Tugay was a special player. Whilst we all loved him, he could really have been playing at a much higher level.

Can't say I did see it but he was a very skilful player and very quick. He had a pretty poor game against us in the European Cup final after big hopes and that's all I'll remember if its all the same...

Fat Ronaldo for me. Talent wise, no player I've seen had anything on him. Pele had diddly-squat on him. No player in the mid to late 90's was close to his level. That is until the injury in Inter wrecked his career. It says something about his insane ability that a 3-time FIFA World Footballer of the Year, a 2-time Ballon D'Or winner and FIFA team of the century player like him is seen as an underachiever.

As a teenager, Maradona.

Laudrup in the early-mid 90s (the time most seem to be referring to here).

As a Madrid fan, it was very hard to appreciate the player behind Stoichkov The unt.

One thing that I think is true is the over saturisation of football. I remember being really excited at watching the players we mentioned and looking out for them. It being difficult then to catch league matches and the World Cup was a major excitement because it brought these unwatched star names out.

Now we have loads of great players but you get to see them all the time if you want to. Some of the romance lost i feel.

Yeah, always heard Stoichkov was a bit of a unt. Bit of a Cantonaesque arrogance and brashness.

Always thought Veron was very underappreciated in this country due to his time in England.

He was amazing in Italy. One of the best midfielders in the last 20 years.

Apparently he might come out of retirement to play for Estudiantes again.
