my main issue with the roman empire is that it set mankind back 500 years, as well as their tacit support for some right nasty regimes, as for the abuse scandals well guess what pe do's worm their way into positions of trust, that's what they do. no one should be defending the church's record in dealing with these abusers but its not the church that do the abusing its individuals who abuse their positions within it.

where people fall down is in separating having a healthy dislike for the catholic church, its history and its present, but also having respect for those who find comfort in its teaching.

Correct..it is not the Priest that becomes the abuser but the abuser that becomes the Priest. There are many many good clergy in the CC that are terrific and devoted to charitable work and are free form any wrong doings.
